What materials are used for trekking and hiking poles?
When choosing your poles, consider the materials, as they affect weight and durability.
Aluminium hiking poles are cheaper and more durable than carbon ones. On average, a pair weighs between 500 and 650 grams. Aluminium withstands high pressure. It is difficult to break or bend. However, aluminium absorbs vibrations less effectively.
Carbon poles are much more lightweight, with a pair weighing on average between 250 and 500 grams. Carbon fibre reduces vibrations but generally offers lower resistance than aluminium versions.
Under high pressure, carbon poles are more fragile. However, they are well suited to dynamic and active pursuits such as fast hiking or trail-running.
