WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING A PAIR OF TRAIL RUNNING SHOES?

When trail running, you may face all types of trails That's why it is important to choose the most suitable model: comfortable, resistant and with proper traction.
Running in the mountains is an incredible way to reconnect with nature and with yourself. Thus said, the essential tool to tackle technical terrain, is a good pair of trail running shoes that protect from rocks and roots, mud and puddles, and allow you to move safely both uphill and downhill. But what should you consider when choosing trail shoes?

YOUR GOALS AND INTENSITY (LEISURE, PROGRESSION - TRAINING  OR COMPETITION)

Whatever your preference, before you buy trail shoes, think about which model fits your foot best - there are rigid or flexible, neutral or stable, wide or narrow, and low or high drop.
Your foot size will influence your choice. A larger size will require a shoe with more support and cushioning for comfort. A smaller size may require more movement and lightness.
You may also be unsure about the size. Leaving at least 1 cm in front of your toes is a good start.
If you are new to trail running or just want to run a few times a month, choose light, versatile shoes. Focus on comfort when you try them on. For regular use to gradually improve, your shoes should be reinforced and supported. They need to withstand long hours of intensive training. For the competition, go light! Very light shoes focus on performance, precision and dynamism, with just the right amount of comfort and cushioning.

YOUR MAIN TERRAIN (GENTLE, STEEP OR VARIED)

On slippery ground, opt for an aggressive grip. The sole should have deep, separate lugs to expel mud. Good instep support will prevent surprises and imbalances!
The terrain you are running on is mixed, on trails that are generally in good condition, choose shoes that are light and versatile. Studs up to 4 mm provide the necessary grip on most surfaces. The thin sole will provide lightness and stability (less deformation of the studs and the foot closer to the ground). Finally, the soft shoes will facilitate the extension of the foot in the fast parts.
On rocky ground, you will need a rigid midsole for stability. The upper of the shoe should be specially reinforced to protect your feet from rocks.

YOUR RUNNING DISTANCE (SHORT DISTANCE TO ULTRA TRAIL)

The distance you run will also be a factor in your choice. Look for a light, responsive shoe for short distances (under 15km). A "classic" multipurpose shoe for medium distances (15 - 50 km). Finally, more support and cushioning will take the pressure off for distances over 50km and ultra-trails.
