Voyage Islande : quels treks et randonnées faire ?
A trip to Iceland is a brilliant idea. For lovers of wild landscapes and raw nature, it's a succession of volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls and spectacular glaciers. A small territory, yes, but a vast expanse of virgin land offering hundreds of possible hikes and treks. So, if you're planning to visit this country and explore it on foot as a seasoned walker, here are some ideas for hikes and treks to do during your Iceland trip. Need ideas for packing your bag? Our clothing selection for Iceland.

Iceland trip: our selection of treks

The Askja Trek

87 km - 5 days - ideal period: mid-June to mid-September The Askja trek is located in Iceland's Highlands region. This route runs from Herðubreiðarlindir to Svartárkot. You'll have the chance to see Lake Öskjuvatn, which is actually an ancient caldera filled with water. You'll also see the Viti crater north of the lake, which contains warm waters at 25°C. Iceland trip: treks and hikes This trek can be done with a guide or independently without too much difficulty. However, it's worth noting that even in summer, the weather can be grim and snowstorms are not uncommon. Also bear in mind the absence of regular water points along the route. You'll need to refill at each refuge.

The Kjalvegur Trek

44 km - 3 days - ideal period: mid-June to mid-September Here's a fairly short and easy trek. It follows an old horse trail and therefore doesn't feature major elevation changes. That said, it's still a beautiful route with spectacular viewpoints across the Kjölur plateau. It allows you to connect two glaciers: Langjökull to the east and Hofsjökull to the west.

The Landmannalaugar Trek

55 km - 4-6 days - ideal period: mid-June to mid-September This is certainly Iceland's most famous trek. The legendary "hot springs route" takes you from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork. You'll traverse fantastic mountains, an immense and beautiful canyon (Markarfljótsgljúfur) and finally arrive in the stunning Thorsmork valley, surrounded by three glaciers. For those wanting more distance, you can add an extra 22 kilometres to reach Skogar waterfall (Skogarfoss). Iceland trip: treks and hikes For athletes and trail running enthusiasts, it's worth noting that an Ultra Trail is run on this trek every July.

The Snaefell Trek

80 km - 4-7 days - ideal period: June to early September Here's a fairly difficult trek that's increasingly popular with enthusiasts. It connects Snæfellsskáli to Stafafell farm. The landscapes are stunning and have an almost otherworldly dimension – they'll be a fine reward for long hours of effort on a technical and demanding trail. You can also extend the pleasure by climbing to the summit of Mount Snæfell (1833m), accessible only if the weather is favourable.

Iceland trip: our selection of hikes

Hike to the summit of Esja

Distance 6 km | duration: 2-4h Here's a hike to do from the capital Reykjavik. From the top, the view over the city is superb and extends to the sea. Beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding mountains too. It's a short outing accessible even for families and day hikers. However, note that the terrain can be slippery in poor weather conditions and it's cold at the summit.

Hikes in Skaftafell National Park

Skaftafell National Park is packed with numerous walks and hikes. They vary in length and are generally accessible to most walkers, even inexperienced ones. Here's a small selection of fairly short hikes, but be aware there's plenty to do in this park:
  • Walk to Skaftafell Glacier: Skaftafellsjökull 3.7 km return - duration: 45min
  • Walk to the basalt waterfall Svarifoss after passing Hundafoss 5.3 km return - duration: 1h30
  • Sjorarnipa Loop Hike 6.4 km return | duration: 2h30
  • Hike to the summit of Kristínartindar 4 km return - duration: 3h-4h
Iceland trip: treks and hikes For slightly longer routes, note:
  • Skaftafellsheidi Loop 15.5 km return - duration: 4h – 6h
  • Baejarstadarskogur Hike 13 km return - duration: 3h
  • Morsarjokull Trail 20.6 km - duration: 4h-6h
  • Kjoss Hike 28.5 km - duration: 5h-7h
There are of course a great many other discoveries to make during a trip to Iceland for walkers and hikers. It's an almost virgin land offering an inexhaustible playground. Not only does it offer moderate difficulty (no very high altitudes) but also breathtaking landscapes and viewpoints. And above all, you're far from the overcrowded trails you can find elsewhere. So don't hesitate, pack your bag, choose your best pair of boots and set off to conquer Iceland!
