There are incredible destinations to discover around the world — ideal for hiking and offering breathtaking scenery.
MONTENEGRO
Among the countries packed with natural wonders, Montenegro stands out. The Orjen massif, with its varied trails, is undoubtedly one of the first places to explore. There is also Mount Subra with its many peaks, including Veliko Kabao and Malo Kabao. Hikers will encounter significant elevation gain, and the trails are generally covered in dense vegetation. The beech forests are a particular highlight for tourists and hikers alike. Enormous natural caves add to the dramatic scenery. The Durmitor National Park is another major draw, representing an important part of Montenegro's heritage. The Velji Garac range, the Bay of Kotor and the Adriatic Sea are also well worth discovering. Numerous remnants of ancient civilisations provide some truly impressive backdrops along the way.
Any hiker will be left in awe discovering Slovenia — and will almost certainly want to stay. The Dolomites refuge is well worth a visit, as are the towns of Venzone and Gemona. Countless other historic sites are scattered across this remarkable country.
BETWEEN SWITZERLAND AND ITALY
The crossing from Switzerland into Italy is a route highly prized by hikers. The Swiss Alps put them to the test with dramatic temperature swings. The Valmaggia valley and the descent towards Robiei are sure to delight. The ascent of Pce di Braga and the descent of Piano del Peccia are also popular routes. To push on towards Italy, you must also climb back up via the Via Alpina, where the elevation changes are considerable. Along the way, the Cabane del Lago is an exceptional stop for any hiker — a place to spend the night before setting off again the next morning. A small kitchen and basic sleeping quarters are available, and a lake sits close by. The roughly 600 m climb up to Passo del Mauro and Brochetta di Pianca, along with their slopes, offers stunning scenery. Some hikers choose to stop during the ascent of Alp d'Aiol to enjoy a magnificent natural bathing spot, complete with whirlpool pools, a few waterfalls and a spectacular natural swimming hole. Crossing the Soazza valley is another option that hikers will thoroughly enjoy. Finally, the trail towards Passo de Forcela provides the last challenge, followed by a valley climbing back up to the pass before arriving in Italy.
CROATIA
Croatia is a country with much to offer in terms of hiking. The Makarska area and the sea edged by limestone rocks are among the most striking settings. The Sutvid valley also presents a fairly demanding ascent or descent. A hike along the road leading to Ploce or Dubrovnik is an original route in its own right, as is a visit to this historic city. Croatia remains a benchmark destination for hiking.
