How to Dress for Travel to Iceland?

01 Apr. 2025

Comment s'habiller pour un voyage en Islande ?

Iceland, located in the north Atlantic, is a dream destination for nature and adventure lovers. Between its volcanic landscapes, imposing glaciers and spectacular fjords, the island offers an ideal setting for hikers. However, its unpredictable and variable climate requires adequate preparation in terms of clothing to fully enjoy your stay. Whether you travel in winter or summer, here are our tips on how to dress in Iceland for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Iceland's climate

Iceland has a temperate oceanic climate, influenced by cold ocean currents and polar winds. The weather can change rapidly, with frequent alternations of rain, wind and sunshine, making proper clothing preparation essential.

In winter, temperatures average around -5°C, with lows that can reach -15°C. The island is covered in snow and ice, and conditions can be tough for hikers. In summer, temperatures are milder, around 12°C, but the climate can still be cool and windy, with a risk of rain.

The best time to explore Iceland is therefore between April and September, when the weather is drier and you can fully enjoy the landscapes without too much climatic hardship. However, winter should not be overlooked, especially for those wishing to see the Northern Lights and explore the glaciers.

Essential clothing for your travel to Iceland

1. Thermal base layers

When heading to Iceland, the first layer is crucial for staying warm. A merino wool thermal base layer or technical fabrics such as bamboo carbon is ideal for regulating your body temperature and wicking perspiration while keeping you warm. It is essential to choose base layers that wick moisture and provide maximum insulation, especially in winter when temperatures can drop very low.

2. Fleece jacket and windproof

Iceland is particularly exposed to wind, so a fleece jacket as a second layer is essential. It provides good thermal insulation while being lightweight and breathable. To complete your outfit, also pack a windproof and waterproof jacket, especially in winter or during the rainy season. A jacket with a waterproof rating of 10,000 Schmerbers will offer sufficient protection against bad weather, while remaining breathable enough to prevent excessive moisture build-up.

3. Built-to-last hiking shoes

Hiking in Iceland often involves rocky, muddy or snowy terrain. A good pair of hiking shoes is therefore essential. Choose resistant, waterproof models with excellent grip to avoid slipping, and with good ankle protection to prevent injury. Don't forget to pack hiking socks in wool or synthetic materials to keep your feet dry and warm.

4. Wind and cold accessories

To effectively protect yourself against cold wind and extreme weather conditions, pack gloves, a beanie or a cap and a scarf. These accessories will help you retain body heat and protect you from the elements, especially during hiking at altitude or near the coast, where the wind can be particularly strong.

5. Waterproof clothing for rain

Iceland is known for its frequent rainfall, so waterproof clothing is a must. A lightweight, compact rain jacket will be easy to carry and will protect you from sudden downpours. Waterproof trousers are also essential to prevent moisture from seeping in and chilling you during outdoor activities. Opt for stretch and breathable garments to stay comfortable on the move.

6. Lightweight and breathable clothing for summer

In summer, although temperatures are milder, the climate can still be cool and windy. Pack lightweight and breathable clothing such as t-shirts in technical materials (for example organic cotton or quick-drying synthetic fabrics), as well as long-sleeved shirts to protect you from the sun and insects. A fleece gilet or a zip jacket will also be useful to add a touch of warmth without weighing down your pack.

7. Mosquito protection

In summer, you may encounter mosquitoes, particularly around bodies of water. To avoid bites, you can opt for mosquito-repellent treated clothing. These garments are impregnated with permethrin, an effective insect repellent. You can also opt for Activ'Dry fabric, made from chitin, a natural repellent that provides continuous protection without the need to reapply sprays or lotions.

Other practical tips for dressing in Iceland

  • Jersey and towel: Don't miss the chance to enjoy Iceland's warm springs or pools. A jersey and a towel are therefore essential, even in winter, as some outdoor pools remain pleasantly warm.
  • Eye mask: In summer, during the midnight sun season, an eye mask can be useful if you struggle to sleep in the light. Bear in mind that night lasts barely 4 to 5 hours in June and July, which can disrupt your sleep cycle.

Dressing for the season

Summer travel

In summer, the key is to stay lightweight and adaptable to temperature changes. Be prepared for longer days, but also for rapid weather shifts. Pack lightweight and compact clothing, as well as extra layers to protect against wind or rain. A lightweight waterproof jacket is ideal, as are breathable hiking socks to prevent blisters.

Winter travel

In winter, prioritise warm clothing, in particular layers that insulate you well from the cold. The three-layer technical system remains essential: a thermal base layer, an insulating layer such as a fleece or a lightweight down jacket, and a waterproof outer layer to protect you from bad weather. Don't forget to pack warm accessories such as gloves, a beanie and thermal socks.

With these practical tips, you'll be ready to face Iceland's varied weather conditions and make the most of your stay. Make sure you pack clothing suited to every situation, focusing on layering for maximum protection.
