Comment s'habiller en Inde : nos conseils pour un voyage confortable et adapté

India is a vast and diverse country with highly varied climates. When you plan a travel to India, choosing the right clothing is essential to make the most of your experience while staying comfortable and respectful of local traditions. Whether you travel to the north, south, or mountainous regions, it is important to prepare well. Here are some tips on how to dress in India to ensure you are ready to handle different weather conditions while respecting local customs.

The ideal season to visit India

India presents climatic conditions that vary enormously depending on the region and the season. It is therefore difficult to define an ideal period to explore this country, but three distinct seasons can be identified: warm, wet and cold.

  • Warm season (February to May): Temperatures can reach extreme highs, especially in the north of the country, with peaks of up to 45°C in May.
  • Monsoon season (late May to October): This period is marked by intense downpours, storms and still warm temperatures.
  • Cool season (October to January): Temperatures are milder, particularly in the north, and pleasant in the south.

The most favourable period to visit India is generally between November and February, when the climate is milder. If you do not mind more extreme conditions, travelling outside this season can offer more competitive prices, although you should be prepared for the heat or humidity.

Clothing to pack for travel to India

Choosing your daytime clothing

When you travel to India, heat is a key factor, but evenings can also be cool. It is therefore essential to choose versatile clothing that can be adjusted according to temperature changes. To know how to dress in India, the three-layer system is ideal. A base layer for moisture management, a mid layer for warmth, and an outer layer for wind and rain protection.

Trousers and T-shirts: Choose lightweight, breathable trousers, such as convertible styles that can be turned into shorts. These trousers are particularly practical and allow you to quickly adapt to temperature changes. Avoid cotton and denim, which, although comfortable, retain moisture and dry slowly.

Go for long-sleeved technical T-shirts, which will protect you from sunburn while being breathable and resistant. These quick-drying garments will help you stay cool, avoid unpleasant odours and manage the heat more effectively.

Useful accessories: A lightweight scarf is an essential accessory. It will serve to protect you from the sun and to cover up when visiting temples.

Mosquito protection: If you are sensitive to insect bites, consider packing clothing with mosquito-repellent fabric. This is the ideal solution to avoid bites, especially if you travel to areas at risk of insect-borne diseases.

How to dress in India for evenings and nights

Temperatures can drop quickly in certain regions, especially at altitude. In the evening, bring a warm windproof jacket, as well as comfortable trousers and a base layer top to keep you warm. It can also be useful to pack warm socks, a beanie and lightweight gloves for cool nights. This will help you maintain your body heat at night, particularly if you are camping or going on long hiking trips.

The right shoes for travel to India

For optimal comfort in the city, go for open sandals during the day. They are ideal for the heat and allow your feet to breathe, especially when walking in warm conditions. If you plan to go hiking, opt for lightweight walking shoes that offer both comfort and ventilation. Make sure they are well broken in to avoid blisters and discomfort.

If you are heading to colder or mountainous areas, built-to-last trekking shoes will be essential. Choose waterproof styles to keep you protected in wet weather.

How to dress in India when visiting places of worship

India is a country rich in religious and cultural traditions. When visiting temples, mosques and other places of worship, it is important to respect local customs.

  • Covering your head: In Sikh temples, both men and women must cover their heads. Pack a scarf or lightweight hat that you can easily adjust for these occasions.
  • Avoid leather: In certain temples, particularly Jain places of worship, it is advisable not to visibly wear leather items (belt, bag, shoes).
  • Remove your shoes: In almost all places of worship, you are required to remove your shoes before entering. It is therefore practical to wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.
