1. Classic muscle injuries in runners
Muscle cramp: the progressive pain
If the pain intensifies over the kilometres and the calf becomes hard, it is a muscle cramp.

Strain and tear: when the fibres give way
A strain is a micro-tear, while a tear (or "muscle pull") involves a more significant rupture of fibres with bruising appearing within 15 minutes.
- Treatment: Apply the RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Compression bandaging is essential to limit swelling and promote healing.
Muscle tear and avulsion
These are the most serious stages. A muscle tear is often accompanied by an audible "snap" and a visible deformation of the muscle. An avulsion (where the muscle separates from its sheath) requires complete rest for 2 to 5 weeks to prevent any chronic recurrence.

Compartment syndrome
It often affects runners with powerful calves. Blood pressure builds up in a closed muscle "compartment", starving the muscle of oxygen.
