How to choose your fleece jacket for skiing?
Unfortunately, you can't predict the weather for your ski holiday! You therefore need to prepare for a range of conditions. If you feel the cold easily or the forecast is cold with low temperatures, the last thing you want is to miss out on the slopes.
Follow our tips to find out how to kit yourself out with the right ski fleece jacket:
- Go for stretch fabrics: skiing is a physically demanding activity, and a stretchy, comfortable fabric will be a clear asset in your ski fleece jacket.
- A compact ski fleece: easy to take off and stow in your ski backpack when the sun comes out or when you step up the intensity of your session.
- Adapt to your kit — skiing in a warm ski jacket with a thermal base layer will keep you warmer than opting for a waterproof jacket alone.
What are the benefits of mid-layers for skiing?
The insulating or mid-layer exists to keep you warm. It also receives the moisture released by the base layer, so it's important that it is breathable. This insulating layer must trap air around your body to retain the heat you naturally generate. You can opt for a synthetic fibre insulating garment such as fleece, which has the advantage of retaining its insulating properties even when wet. It also offers good breathability and dries quickly. Alternatively, you can go for down, with a lightweight down jacket that delivers unmatched warmth — especially during static phases.
What mid-layers can you wear for skiing?
Here are the two main types of mid-layer used for skiing:
Fleece jackets and fleece pullovers are very popular as a mid-layer for skiing. Fleece is soft, warm, lightweight and offers good thermal insulation. It retains body heat and wicks moisture to keep you warm and dry during physical activity.
These are padded jackets insulated with down or synthetic fill. They offer excellent thermal insulation and are ideal for very cold days on the ski slopes. Down jackets are lightweight, compactable and provide great warmth without the bulk.
How to choose the right thickness for mid-layers?
When temperatures are mild or if you tend to get warm while skiing, a lightweight fleece mid-layer is an ideal option. If you tend to feel cold or face icy conditions, a down jacket is the better choice.
