Why wear a technical, breathable hiking t-shirt?
On the trail, a hiking t-shirt technical fabric keeps you from finishing the day in a soaked garment. Cotton absorbs water and dries slowly; a breathable t-shirt moves sweat to the outside and helps regulate body temperature during exercise. Lightweight and stretchy, it moves with you without restricting your stride. For a day’s hiking or a multi-day trek, wear it as a base layer next to your skin to stay dry.
Synthetic or merino wool hiking t-shirt: how do you choose?
Choosing a hiking t-shirt depends mainly on how hard you’ll be working and how long you’ll be out. Synthetic styles are lightweight, highly breathable and quick-drying: ideal for intense efforts and warm conditions. The merino wool blended with recycled polyester in our styles regulates temperature more effectively and naturally resists odours, an advantage on multi-day treks: the men’s CLAPIER (115 g) and women’s AIGLIERE (90 g) have short sleeves. Cotton/polyester T-shirts such as the SHELTER and MAP are classified as travel and lifestyle styles: their product pages recommend them for everyday wear and gentle walks. For more demanding hiking, choose a synthetic or merino style. To decide, keep these points in mind:
- Synthetic: lightweight, breathable and quick-drying
- Merino: temperature regulation and natural odour resistance
- Short sleeves or a vest for warm weather
- Long sleeves for cooler conditions at altitude
- A fitted or relaxed cut, whichever feels more comfortable
Technical hiking t-shirt: quick-drying and odour-resistant
A t-shirt’s breathability depends on its fabrics and how they are knitted. According to their product pages, CimaDry technology makes the men’s and women’s VENTURI dry up to 10 times faster than standard cotton. Ultra-lightweight styles such as the EIGER (80 g) and ELENA (60 g) feature CimaFresh odour-control treatment. These fine, stretchy knits move moisture to the outside of the garment, where it evaporates. For a sustained climb or a very hot day, choose a quick-drying synthetic style.
Odour control, UV protection and comfort: what makes a good hiking t-shirt
Beyond breathability, several details make a good hiking t-shirt. An antibacterial treatment helps limit odours, useful on multi-day trips when you can’t wash your clothes. On exposed ridges, the EIGER offers UPF 40+ sun protection, while the cotton/polyester T-shirts block UV rays up to UPF 30. You’ll find more clothing in our selection to protect yourself from UV rays. Stretch fabrics let you move freely, and many styles have reflective details for late in the day. Crew neck, half-zip on the FARAUT and AUTANE, or zip neck on the ARGENTIERES: choose how much ventilation you want to control as you walk.
Which men’s or women’s hiking t-shirt should you choose for each season?
Our men’s hiking T-shirts and women’s offer the same technical features in men’s and women’s cuts. In summer, choose a breathable short-sleeved top or vest. In cooler weather, a long-sleeved top completes the three-layer system: the men’s VENTURI LS (190 g) and women’s version (135 g), plus the men’s CHARVIN (160 g) and women’s ASPRES (125 g) in merino. Lighter still, the men’s BAUGES LS (110 g) and women’s BOREON LS (95 g) are designed for trail running. When it’s cold, switch to the ALBAN (210 g, thumbholes) or the ARGENTIERES (240 g, zip neck), two men’s styles. Complete your outfit with hiking shorts, hiking trousers or a hiking cap, and find the rest of the gear in our hiking clothing.
