Which men's trail jacket should you choose for the weather?
On an exposed ridge, the wind chills your torso long before the rain arrives. In dry, windy weather, a windproof jacket weighing under 150 g is enough: it blocks the wind and packs away in your bag without weighing you down. When rain sets in, switch to a jacket with a waterproof, breathable membrane, hood and taped seams. For cold, dry winter outings, wear a stretch thermal jacket as your outer layer. Men's waterproof trail jackets: Schmerber ratings, breathability and mandatory kit
A jacket rated at 10,000 Schmerber withstands a 10,000 mm water column before water passes through. Breathability, measured in g/m²/24h, indicates how much moisture vapour escapes during exercise. The UTMB rules, for example, require a hooded jacket with a waterproof, breathable membrane and taped seams, and set a benchmark of 10,000 Schmerber. Find the details in our guide to mandatory waterproof clothing for the UTMB.
The STORM, with its Cimashell membrane, meets that standard: 10,000 Schmerber, 12,500 g/m²/24h, taped seams and under 250 g. The STORM PRO steps up to the three-layer Ultrashell membrane : 20,000 Schmerber, 80,000 g/m²/24h and under 300 g, with a stiff hood peak and a two-way central zip that opens from the bottom for ventilation. The STORM TEAM, its limited-edition version, is worn by Rémy Brassac, a member of Team Cimalp and winner of the 2026 TDS.
Men's trail and running windproof layers: choose by wind speed
Every Cimalp product page states the wind speed its jacket can block. The SKIN models, made from CimaWind fabric, are designed for moderate winds of 40 to 60 km/h. The SKIN GILET protects your torso while leaving your arms free; the SKIN JACKET adds sleeves and a close-fitting hood that stays in place as you run. Their water-repellent treatment sheds a passing shower; for sustained rain, choose a jacket with a membrane.
On exposed mountain passes and ridges, the WIND provides a strong winds of 60 to 90 km/h. Its stretch fabric moves with your shoulders, while the close fit lets you wear it under a waterproof jacket when the weather turns. Find the hiking and trail models in our men's windproof jackets.
Men's winter running jackets: stay warm without overheating
In cold weather, sweat is the challenge: a jacket that's too warm leaves your back soaked on the first climb, then chills you when you stop at an aid station. The BLIZZARD, in Cimatherm Stretch, insulates while remaining stretchy and breathable. Wear it over a a thermal base layer lightweight top on its own in cold, dry weather, or under a waterproof jacket when rain or snow arrives.
