How do you wash a waterproof garment?
First, check the garment label for the manufacturer's specific instructions. They may provide specific recommendations for washing the garment. Before washing your waterproof jacket, make sure to close all zips and flaps. Then loosen the straps and all elasticated parts. Finally, turn your jacket inside out before placing it in the machine. For washing, choose a mild liquid detergent specially designed for waterproof or technical garments. Do not use fabric softener, as it can damage the waterproof coating on the fabric. However, if you need to treat specific stains, do so before machine washing. The best programme for machine washing is the synthetic cycle at 30°. Above all, avoid mixing your waterproof jacket with other coloured garments that might bleed.
How do you restore the waterproofing of a garment?
It is also important to note that waterproof garments may require re-waterproofing after several washes to restore their waterproof performance. You can use a Nikwax waterproofing spray specially designed for technical garments:
- Lay the clean, wet garment flat with zips closed.
- Hold the spray 15 cm from the garment.
- Apply evenly to the outer fabric of the garment.
- Wait 2 minutes then wipe off the excess with a damp cloth.
- Make sure nothing has been missed.
- After several minutes, wipe away all the excess with a damp cloth.
How do you dry waterproof garments after washing?
It is important to follow the garment manufacturer's specific drying instructions, as some recommendations may vary depending on the type of fabric and waterproof coating used. Otherwise, two options are available:
- Air dry it, lay your jacket flat in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.
- Or use a tumble dryer on a very gentle cycle, making sure to close all zips.
