HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT CYCLING GEAR
- For short trips or occasional use: a rucksack is the most practical option. Otherwise, choose handlebar, saddle or frame bags: they’re small and practical, with room for your essentials.
- For everyday use: if you regularly cycle to work, a 15- to 20-litre pannier is ideal for carrying your kit. Alternatively, or as well, a large handlebar bag and/or saddle bag may suit this use.
For shopping or carrying bulky items, a double pannier on a rear rack is a good choice, offering 20 to 50 litres of storage. A handlebar bag with a shoulder strap makes it easy to carry your essentials (wallet, phone, keys…) when you get off the bike. Consider ease of use when choosing a bike bag: you may attach and remove it several times. Easy-to-use mounts and closures are essential.
- For cycle touring: you’ll need plenty of storage. A 40- to 50-litre double pannier on the rear rack is a good choice. A double pannier at the front gives you more room for your belongings.
- Ortlieb mounting systems:
Quick-Lock 1 : This system lets you attach and remove your panniers with one hand. Simply lift the handle to open the two hooks on the back of the pannier. Release the handle and the hooks close around the tube. The only requirement is a tube diameter of 8 to 16 mm. Quick-Lock 1 also lets you position the pannier closer to or further from the bike frame, depending on how much space you need.
Quick-Lock 2 : This mounting system has the same features as the first, with an added anti-theft mechanism. Adjustment is also more reliable, faster and easier.
Quick-Lock 3 / 3.1 : These mounting systems are designed for urban cycling. The mount stays on the bike’s pannier rack, so there’s no hook on your bag to make it uncomfortable to carry on foot.
Rack-Lock : This system consists of four hooks, two of them flexible. A simple press attaches the Rack-Lock to a pannier rack, which can support up to 10 kg.
EVERYDAY RUCKSACKS: IDEAL FOR CYCLING TO WORK
