The women's windproof jacket, an outdoor essential
Wind during hiking, trail or running can be dangerous if you are not well equipped. Indeed, the stronger it is, the greater the perceived cold. Even a slight breeze can lower the temperature significantly. Having a women's windproof jacket that allows you to maintain a good body temperature is therefore essential to avoid any unpleasant surprises!
Staying well protected from the wind
To stay protected in a women's windproof jacket, several factors need to be taken into account:
- Protecting the extremities: The extremities of the body (head, hands, feet) are the parts that lose the most heat. A beanie or warm cap protects your head well from the cold, but ideally you should have a windproof hood attached to your jacket. A three-point adjustable hood is recommended for optimal fit.
- Clothing adjustment: Also remember to adjust your clothing at the sleeves and waist. This way, cold air cannot get in and you stay protected. Classic windproof jackets are very lightweight. They feature a 100% windproof membrane, offer excellent breathability, but are not always waterproof.
For a good heat input, you can also opt for a sleeveless hiking jacket.
Technical windproof for women: softshell and hardshell jacket
- Softshell Jacket: Unlike a simple windproof jacket, a women's softshell allows better air circulation and improved thermal regulation. The softshell is generally used as the second and third layer. It provides warmth, comfort, thermal insulation, water-repellent treatment, wind protection and offers great freedom of movement. However, if you are hiking in unstable conditions and are likely to encounter rain on top of wind, the softshell is not necessarily the right jacket. It has a water-repellent treatment, but is not waterproof.
- Hardshell Jacket: For a windproof offering maximum protection, you can opt for a women's waterproof hardshell jacket. These jackets are waterproof and offer excellent resistance against the elements (rain, snow, hail and wind). The hardshell jacket is ideal in unstable weather. It is lightweight and compresses well in your pack. It does not need to provide warmth as it is used as the third layer, on top of the insulating second layer. The hardshell is also breathable, but not as much as a softshell.
