Which men’s thermal base layer should you choose for winter?
At the summit, leave your jacket open two minutes too long and the top soaked on the climb turns cold against your skin. A base layer helps prevent that moment. Choose one for the effort and the cold. For balanced warmth, the synthetic CimaWarm WARM TOP weighs 220 g in size M, while the merino wool WOOL TOP 200 weighs 213 g. For intense warmth, the X-WARM TOP combines two insulating fabrics and weighs 285 g, while the WOOL TOP 240 weighs 233 g. For sustained effort in cool weather, the WOOL TOP 150 weighs just 160 g.
If you sweat heavily on the climb, choose a WARM; save the X-WARM and WOOL 240 for severe cold and long stops.
Men’s thermal base-layer top: a zipped collar to regulate warmth
A zipped base-layer top keeps wind off your neck and opens up on the climb. The WARM ZIP (230 g) and X-WARM ZIP (290 g) do this in synthetic fabric; the merino wool WOOL ZIP 200 and 240 weigh 230 and 240 g respectively. Open the zip on the climb and close it when you stop. In very cold weather, zip the X-WARM ZIP collar up to your chin.
Men’s thermal leggings under ski or hiking trousers
Without thermal leggings, you’ll feel the cold in your legs from the first descents. The WARM PANT (170 g in size M) traps a thin layer of warm air against your skin with its brushed inner; wear it whenever the temperature drops below 0 °C. The WOOL PANT 150, 200 and 240 weigh 140, 183 and 200 g respectively. The STRATEGIC PANT is knitted seamlessly from bamboo and silk, with no raised seams to rub.
Put on your thermal leggings from the start in cold weather: their close fit adds no volume under your trousers. For the layer on top, see our men’s warm trousers.
Seamless, merino or synthetic: the fabric against your skin
The STRATEGIC TOP and PANT combine bamboo and silk in a seamless knit designed for sensitive skin. The completely seamless SEAMLESS TOP (160 g in S/M) is made for high-intensity ski touring and winter trail running; the SEAMLESS HOODIE TOP adds a hood that converts into a balaclava. The synthetic WARM and X-WARM styles are treated with Polygiene StayFresh to combat odours.
The merino wool in the WOOL styles limits odours without added treatment. For several days in mountain huts without washing facilities, choose a merino wool style. Find them all in our merino wool base layers.
Technical boxer shorts and layering
Your base layer starts below the waist. The seamless UNDER boxer shorts (100 g), treated with Polygiene StayFresh, extend further down the thighs to prevent chafing; the JULIOZ briefs (58 g in size M) combine two fabrics positioned to suit different areas of the body. Over your thermal top, add a warm layer: our men’s fleeces or our men’s down jackets.
Choose your usual size for tops and thermal leggings : the close fit keeps the fabric against your skin. Find the full range in our thermal base layers, and the women’s fits in our women’s thermal base layers.
