Tout savoir sur le ski

France has one of the largest and most renowned ski areas in the world, with more than 350 ski resorts today, located mainly in the Alps, but also in the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Jura and the Vosges.

A ski resort is a holiday or leisure destination equipped with recreational facilities and ski lifts that take you up to altitude so you can then descend the slopes. There are two types of ski resort: alpine skiing resorts and Nordic skiing resorts.

From small village resorts to vast ski areas, the skiing offering is rich and varied, as are the range of experiences to be had during your mountain stay. For those who want to do more than just ski, there are plenty of off-slope activities available — though these vary by resort, with some offering more than others. Every year, millions of visitors flock to the French mountains. A favourite destination for ski holidays, France is also appreciated for its gastronomy and its diverse resorts.

What is skiing?

Skiing means gliding down a slope on skis. It is a sliding sport. It's a sport for young and old alike, but especially for thrill-seekers and those who love admiring the beauty of wide-open white spaces. Piste skiing is a complete sport: it improves your balance, coordination and agility all at once. That said, skiing requires a reasonable level of physical fitness — not only to get the most enjoyment on the slopes, but above all to reduce the risk of injury.

The different disciplines

Today, there are other alternatives to piste skiing, such as cross-country skiing, freeride skiing, freestyle skiing, ski touring or snowboarding, so there's something for everyone. It's also a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh mountain air with family or friends — and above all, to have fun!

An Olympic sport

Competitive alpine skiing consists of 6 Olympic disciplines:

  • Downhill
  • Super-G
  • Giant Slalom
  • Slalom
  • Parallel
  • Combined

Speed or technical events, these disciplines are contested at various national and international championships, as well as at the Winter Olympic Games.
