How to dress for Mont Blanc?

06 Sep. 2022

If you're planning to climb Mont Blanc, it pays to be well prepared. At 4,809 metres, this summit is the highest point in the Alps. Climbers wishing to make the ascent must have a solid knowledge of high-altitude mountaineering, prepare seriously — both physically and mentally — and have the right equipment. To take on this challenge in the best possible conditions, this article explains how to dress for Mont Blanc.

Dressing the upper body

The first layer

As with hiking and mountaineering in general, it is recommended to dress in a three-layer system for Mont Blanc. Your thermal base layer helps wick away perspiration and retain the heat your body produces. As temperatures are very low at high altitude, we recommend choosing a thick, long-sleeved first layer. In terms of material, merino wool or hybrid base layers are the best choice.

The second layer

During exertion, a synthetic fleece works well as a second layer. Its key advantage is that it retains its thermal insulating capacity even when wet. At rest, you can switch to a more insulating second layer to stay warm. A down jacket is perfect for this role and has the added benefit of being compressible in your backpack.

The third layer

For mountaineering on Mont Blanc, it is important to have a hardshell protective jacket. A 3-layer jacket is recommended for this type of activity. Its construction provides high protection against abrasion, wind, rain and snow. When choosing your third layer, make sure your jacket features a shorter cut at the front or a double-slider zip so that your harness is not obstructed by your jacket.

Dressing the lower body

The thermal base layer

For dressing for Mont Blanc, a ¾-length thermal base layer is recommended for the lower body. It will help you retain heat better in such cold conditions.

The mountaineering trouser

Your mountaineering trouser must meet certain requirements. It should offer good protection against the elements, solid thermal comfort and sufficient breathability. Make sure to choose a trouser with reinforcements at the lower leg and pre-shaped knees. Pair your trouser with gaiters to protect your feet from snow and cold.

Waterproof overtrousers

Designed with 3 layers, your overtrousers provide additional protection. Their rigid fabric is extremely waterproof and abrasion-resistant against rock. They are your best ally when crossing sections with heavy snowfall or in bad weather.

Essential accessories for Mont Blanc

The beanie or balaclava

Protecting your head — and especially your ears — at high altitude is essential. To guard against the cold, wearing a beanie or balaclava under your mountaineering helmet is crucial. Remember to pack a spare to wear when you're not wearing the helmet. Choosing a beanie specifically designed for mountaineering is highly recommended. It provides better insulation, particularly around the ears, which are very sensitive to cold and frostbite.

Gloves

For Mont Blanc, you should also plan for several pairs of gloves. The first pair — thin gloves — is used for the approach walk. During the ascent, you can add gloves with a warm lining. Finally, you may also want to pack heavy-duty gloves for when you reach the summit of Mont Blanc.

Choosing the right clothing for a Mont Blanc ascent is not something to take lightly. You need to kit yourself out with quality technical gear to be properly prepared. In 2017, the municipality of Saint-Gervais decided to enforce a minimum mandatory equipment list for the Mont Blanc ascent. This includes a compulsory waterproof jacket, overtrousers and a beanie. To tackle the Mont Blanc ascent, it is also essential to be properly equipped with mountaineering gear: mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, crevasse rescue kit, rope, ice axe, altimeter...
