How to dress for the GR20?

06 Sep. 2022

Are you planning to take on the GR20? This iconic long-distance hiking trail crosses Corsica from north to south. It is a demanding mountain route, often described as “Europe's toughest trail”, packed with technical sections and roughly 11,000 metres of elevation gain. The GR20 consists of 16 stages, making it essential to gear up properly so you can hike for days without issues. Here is how to dress safely and effectively for the GR20.

Key factors to consider when dressing for the GR20

How to dress for the GR20 depends on several factors, especially how long you plan to take to complete the trek. If you aim to complete it as a trail run in just a few days, opt for ultra-lightweight, breathable gear and carry the absolute minimum. If you tackle the GR20 in a traditional way, over roughly 16 days, you will want more versatile, protective clothing and more spare layers.

Your choice of clothing also depends on the season and weather forecast. In summer, you can opt for lightweight apparel, but always carry weather-protective layers. In winter, mountaineering gear is mandatory.

Upper body clothing

The three-layer system is the most effective choice for a long trek like the GR20. For your upper body, start with a technical t-shirt as a base layer. While merino wool is best suited for multi-day wear because it naturally resists odours, synthetic technical fabrics are also a solid option. In terms of quantity, pack two or three t-shirts, including one long-sleeved top for colder stretches.

For your mid-layer, pack a fleece or a lightweight down jacket to provide effective thermal insulation. Finally, your outer shell must protect you from harsh weather, which is frequent in the mountains. Avoid rain capes, which lack breathability and flap in high winds; choose a windproof and waterproof jacket like a Gore-Tex® shell instead.

Finally, while a softshell can be very versatile, it is not recommended as your main shell on such a long trek, as it does not offer the same storm protection as a hardshell.

Lower body clothing

For the lower body, you have several options. If you are hiking in summer, choose lightweight hiking trousers, shorts or convertible zip-off trousers for extra versatility. It is also wise to carry a second, more technical pair of trousers featuring reinforcements in high-wear zones, waterproof protection or extra insulation.

If your trousers do not offer weather protection, you can also pack waterproof overtrousers. Finally, in cold conditions, carry leggings or thermal tights to wear under your trousers. They are also ideal for the bivvy.

Essential footwear and accessories for the GR20

The ideal footwear for the GR20 is purpose-built alpine hiking footwear, with a mid or high cut providing solid ankle support. You can also opt for technical trail running shoes. Finally, consider bringing a pair of sandals for the bivvy.

In addition to your upper and lower body clothing, make sure to pack several pairs of dedicated trekking socks, a pair of gloves, a beanie, a neck gaiter and sunglasses.

Dressing properly for the GR20 allows you to move safely and comfortably through the mountains for days on end. Technical clothing is breathable, insulating, weather-resistant and protective against abrasions. It is also versatile and adapts to shifting conditions. All that's left is to get physically and mentally prepared to tackle the GR20 in the best conditions.
