A selection based on race experience
First of all, you should know that you need to demonstrate trail experience. To this end, the UTMB® has established ITRA point thresholds to be earned in previous years to prove your ability to take on this type of event.
A second phase based on a lottery draw
Given the very large number of candidates for this flagship event, which attracts trail runners from across the globe, the organiser has introduced a lottery draw process to select participants. With more than 26,000 applications for only 10,000 available places (across all races), this is an unavoidable stage. If luck doesn't favour a candidate in the lottery draw, they receive double the chances the following year for the same race, and then registration priority after two unsuccessful lottery draws.
