Mosquito-repellent clothing: no more having to apply lotion.

Mosquito-repellent clothing: no more having to apply lotion.

25 May. 2019

Vêtements anti-moustiques : l'avantage est de ne plus être obligé de s’enduire de lotion.
Have you ever been bitten by mosquitoes while hiking, trekking, travelling or at a bivvy? Almost certainly yes! And you tell yourself it's just bad luck or unavoidable. But did you know there's an effective weapon against mosquitoes beyond creams and sprays: mosquito-repellent clothing — which we invite you to explore.

Mosquitoes and other bugs: risks worth taking seriously!

Of course, mosquito bites are unpleasant and irritating. And most of the time it stops there, with no further health consequences. But that doesn't mean we should overlook the more serious and complex cases.

No one can ignore the proliferation of tiger mosquitoes or the diseases linked to their bites, such as chikungunya or the Zika virus. These are scourges affecting European countries and can have harmful health consequences, particularly for the most vulnerable. If you travel to the tropics, the prevalence of these mosquitoes is even greater, and you also need to be aware of those that transmit dengue fever (which can be fatal from the second bite onwards).

And today, the damage caused by Lyme disease from ticks in forests cannot be ignored either. Even though ticks aren't mosquitoes, you'll see below that mosquito-repellent clothing solutions are equally effective against these woodland ticks. It is therefore clear that beyond comfort protection, effective mosquito repellency is also important for your health and for guarding against more serious consequences.

Mosquito-repellent clothing with INSECT-STOPER® treatment

To avoid carrying spray or other products — which you often risk forgetting in your bag or hotel room — kit yourself out with mosquito-repellent clothing. Whether you're heading out on a hike or a less sporty trip, they will prove extremely useful. The garments are impregnated with an active molecule, permethrin, which is used to kill or repel insects (ants, mosquitoes, flies, lice, fleas, cockroaches, etc.) and arachnids (spiders, scorpions, mange mites, ticks, etc.). The aqueous permethrin solutions used are resistant to many washes. The formula is based on permethrin, an insecticidal active ingredient recognised as effective against all species of mosquitoes (Aedes including Aedes albopictus, the so-called "tiger mosquito", Culex and Anopheles). This treatment may cause skin sensitisation; if so, stop wearing the garments.

A particularly effective solution

This treatment is currently the only one validated for clothing by the United States Environmental Protection Agency: permethrin is even strongly recommended by the WHO as protection against insect bites. Wearing such garments will repel mosquitoes instantly, with no odour or particular colour. This built-in protection applies to all types of garment: shirts, trousers, shorts, and more. One of the great benefits is that you no longer need to apply lotion before heading out for a walk or a day's adventure. The only action required is to put your clothes on before going outside. It's ultimately an integrated, non-harmful protection that works all day without losing its effectiveness. And the major advantage of this solution is that washing barely diminishes the power of permethrin, the active molecule in this process (effective at over 80% after 30 washes). You can therefore choose mosquito-repellent trousers, shorts or a shirt that will give you solid protection in forests and across all hiking terrain, or at a bivvy in the evening during your treks.

A wide range of mosquito-repellent clothing

There is a wide range of garments available, affordable in price and featuring modern, comfortable cuts. Nothing about them suggests they are impregnated with any substance. You'll find shorts, trousers and shirts alike, all effective against ticks and mosquitoes. A pair of trousers made from very lightweight, mosquito-repellent fabric will protect you from any potential attack by the bugs found along our paths. Ticks and mosquitoes will be kept at bay. This protection is effective with full-length trousers as well as shorts, bermudas or cropped trousers: the mosquito-repellent treatment acts as a powerful insecticide and keeps all these pests at a distance. With shirts, this works for long-sleeved shirts as well as short-sleeved ones, even though the latter leave part of your arms exposed. Mosquitoes are not as harmless as they might seem and are at the very least extremely unpleasant! The most effective mosquito repellent that is also the simplest to use and requires no effort is the impregnated garment — an easy-to-implement and ultimately low-cost solution. You can therefore rid yourself of the nuisance of mosquitoes and ticks in a very straightforward way and make the most of your hikes, woodland walks and travels with mosquito-repellent clothing!
