Clothing waste
Every year, the volume of garments produced worldwide continues to grow, driven in particular by the rise of fast fashion. The production phase is highly polluting, accounting for no less than 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, excessive clothing consumption generates massive amounts of waste.
Pollution caused by plastic
In 2020, over 367 million tonnes of plastic were produced worldwide. An alarming figure given that the vast majority of production ends up in the oceans. Yet plastic production continues to rise, as it is heavily used to manufacture synthetic fibre clothing such as polyester. According to the organisation Textile Exchange, polyester accounted for 52% of global clothing production in 2020.
Creating clothing from recycled plastic
To continue producing clothing while reducing environmental impact, recycling has emerged as a genuine solution. The easiest plastic to recycle is PET (polyethylene terephthalate). Mainly used in water bottles, it is collected, cleaned, shredded, and reduced to flakes. These flakes are then processed into pellets and spun like wool. The resulting material, known as rPET, is then used to produce fabric.

The production of recycled polyester significantly reduces environmental impact. Giving plastic a second life saves natural resources and fossil fuels, while also helping to combat soil, ocean, and atmospheric pollution. Recycled polyester prevents plastic from being incinerated—releasing CO2—or ending up in the bellies of whales. Finally, its production generates 40% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than virgin polyester.

Clothing made from rPET plastic shares the exact same properties as conventional polyester apparel. They are just as durable, lightweight, comfortable, and affordable, but with the crucial advantage of being far less polluting. They are equally suited for daily wear and sports.
