Running the Ultra-Trail du Mont-White on one of the most demanding courses in the world—what trail runner hasn't dreamed of that? To keep your mind clear and focused on training, CIMALP equips you from head to toe. Follow this guide to take on the UTMB® in the best possible conditions!
The UTMB®: race formats for every level
Chamonix is the trail running capital of the world! Every year in late August, passionate runners and the global elite gather at the foot of legendary Mont White. The goal? To live their passion for mountain running to the fullest. The flagship event, the UTMB®—with its 174 km and 9,900 m of positive elevation gain—is every trail runner's dream.
There are 7 other timed races throughout the week, catering to every profile of runner. Seasoned athletes will take on the PTL®, run in teams over roughly 300 km, or tackle the TDS® and CCC®. On the other end of the spectrum, the MCC® offers a 40 km maratrail reserved for volunteers, partners and Mont-White residents, while the ETC spans 15 km. Younger runners can join in with the YCC, alongside the Mini UTMB for kids. Everyone can enjoy the event and the great outdoors!
If these iconic UTMB Group races are your dream, thorough preparation and the right kit are essential prerequisites for success.
Conquer the UTMB with the right kit!
The legendary UTMB® is unforgiving, with rugged terrain and high-altitude mountain passes. That is why, beyond your fitness on race day, the trail clothing and gear you pack will play a vital role in your success.
Race organisers set a mandatory kit list that may vary based on weather forecasts ('heatwave', 'extreme cold' and 'bad weather' kits). A key update for 2026: one of your two headlamps must feature a red light mode, mandatory within the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve. Check out the full, updated list in our dedicated article Mandatory kit for UTMB® 2026. To get race-ready, CIMALP shares its top selection of trail clothing and accessories.
Waterproof and breathable clothing
First and foremost, protecting yourself from rain and wind is non-negotiable! Waterproof clothing—jacket and trousers—keeps you insulated and retains body warmth. UTMB® rules require specific minimum standards for jackets (waterproof membrane, 10,000 Schmerber minimum, and breathable with a RET below 13): discover full details and exact specs of our gear in our article Mandatory waterproof clothing for the UTMB®.
At Cimalp, our men's and women's STORM jackets meet all mandatory ultra-trail race requirements: lightweight, stretchy and ultra-breathable.

For maximum performance, explore the STORM PRO for men and women: its 3-layer ULTRASHELL® membrane delivers 20,000 Schmerber and 80,000 g/m²/24h breathability, well above mandatory race requirements, for top-tier protection.

Next, when it comes to trousers, the STORM PRO PANT will keep you perfectly dry while offering outstanding freedom of movement.

Stretchy, lightweight running clothes
Even if you only pull out waterproof clothing in specific conditions, your running kit is absolutely essential.
Running shorts or tights?
First, go for trail shorts like the LAVAREDO for men and the RESTONICA for women: lightweight, with built-in twin shorts to prevent chafing and a practical multi-pocket waistband.

For fans of tights, our lightweight and stretchy MUNHOA model for women features a practical multi-pocket waistband that prevents any bouncing while running and provides extra storage for gear or nutrition.

Short or long sleeves
Next up, look for trail t-shirts whose technical features will play a key role in your performance and body thermoregulation. Our top picks: the BAUGES for men and BORÉON for women, featuring natural anti-odour and antibacterial treatments.

Next, for a warmer mid-layer, runners need a versatile, high-performing garment like the BLIZZARD jacket for men and women. Ideal for cold nights and chilly mountain passes, with reinforced zones on the shoulders and back for backpack stability. Note: race regulations require a long-sleeved mid-layer weighing at least 180 g (men's size M), excluding cotton—make sure to check before choosing.

What about foot comfort?
Last but not least, make sure to choose shoes engineered specifically for trail running. Find our detailed selection criteria (flexibility, weight, cushioning, drop) in our article Choosing your shoes for the UTMB®.

Accessories: essentials to keep you moving forward!
Along with a technical pair of socks, a headlamp and other accessories, a trail running pack is absolutely essential. Find the full mandatory kit list (water bladder, survival blanket, waterproof gloves, etc.) in our article Mandatory gear to pack for the UTMB®.
At Cimalp, you will find neck warmers, arm warmers and various types of beanie.
For those who run with trail poles, keep in mind that if you start with them, you must carry them for the entire race: collecting poles along the route is strictly forbidden.
In short, now that your gear list is sorted, keep up the training! The UTMB® is a demanding race where physical preparation cannot be overlooked. Check out our quick guide to help you prepare for the UTMB®.
