Bien s’équiper pour l’UTMB®: nos conseils de pro

Running the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc on one of the most demanding terrains in the world — every trail runner has dreamed of it. To keep your mind free and focused on your training, CIMALP takes care of kitting you out from head to toe. Follow the guide to tackle the UTMB® in the best possible conditions!

UTMB®: race profiles for every level

Chamonix is the trail capital of the world! Every year, at the end of August, passionate runners and global elites converge at the foot of the legendary Mont Blanc. Why? To fully indulge their passion: mountain running. And the flagship race, the UTMB®, with its 170km and 10,000m of positive elevation gain, is the dream of every trail runner.

There are 7 other race formats on offer throughout the week — something to suit every type of runner. The most seasoned athletes will find their match in the MCC®, a maratrail format, or the PTL®, run in teams of 3 over 300km. As for the younger generation, they won't miss out either, with the YCC or the mini UTMB for children. Everyone gets to enjoy the event and the great outdoors!

If these famous UTMB Group races are your dream, solid preparation and the right kit are essential prerequisites for a successful race.

Nailing your UTMB with the right kit!

The UTMB® is a legendary mountain race, demanding in its rugged terrain and high-altitude alpine sections. That's why, beyond your physical condition on race day, your trail kit and the equipment you carry will play a crucial role in your success.

Race organisers provide a mandatory equipment list, which may vary depending on weather conditions. It includes "heatwave", "extreme cold" and "bad weather" kits. To help you navigate it all, CIMALP has put together its selection of trail clothing and accessories.

Waterproof and breathable clothing

First of all, protection from rain and wind is essential! Waterproof clothing — jacket and trousers — insulates you and preserves your body heat.

The characteristics required by the regulations are:

  • Fabric with waterproof membrane
  • Minimum waterproofing of 10,000mm
  • RET below 13 (or minimum 10,000g/m²/24h)

At Cimalp, our STORM jackets for Men and Women are certified for ultra-trail. They satisfy runners looking for high-performance products. Lightweight and stretchy, they deliver uncompromising waterproofing and are ultra-breathable. And to make packing easy, this type of jacket is compressible: it folds away into the chest pocket.

For the most demanding, check out the STORM PRO for men and women for maximum protection thanks to the ULTRASHELL® membrane.

On the bottoms side, the Storm Pro Pant will perfectly meet your need to stay dry. It also offers considerable freedom of movement, which matters greatly during a high-mountain race.

Race clothing: stretchy and lightweight

Even if you only reach for your waterproof clothing in certain conditions, your race kit itself is absolutely fundamental.

Running shorts or running tights?

First, go for a trail short like the Aoste French for men. Lightweight, it features an integrated inner short to prevent chafing.
For women, the Vésubie short with its multi-pocket waistband offers comfort and practicality throughout the race.

For fans of tights, our Tende model for men and Munhoa for women — light and stretchy — feature a practical multi-pocket waistband. It prevents any bouncing sensation during the race. The tights are breathable and comfortable, and the pockets provide extra storage beyond your pack, which is a real bonus in trail. Indeed, it means you can carry and stow more gear or nutrition.

Short or long sleeves

Next, think about t-shirts designed for trail running, where the technical performance of the garment plays a key role in your progress. Breathable, it helps with your body's thermoregulation. Our top picks: the Bauges for men and the Boréon for women! Offering perfect moisture management, these t-shirts feature a natural anti-odour and antibacterial treatment.
You can also combine these tops with arm warmers to regulate hypo or hyperthermia throughout the race.

For the 2nd warmer layer, runners look for a versatile and efficient garment like the Blizzard jacket, available for both men and women. It will be a perfect essential for tackling the night and cooler sections at altitude! With its high collar, zipped pocket and hood, it will make a real difference during the race — especially thanks to its lightness and abrasion resistance. The reinforced zones on the shoulders and back also help keep your pack in place.

What about foot comfort?

Last but not least, make sure you choose shoes specifically designed for trail running! Four criteria should be considered before buying a pair. Flexibility, weight, cushioning and drop are all key factors. Better understanding running and how your body works means giving yourself the best possible chance of improving your stride. It will feel more natural and less punishing over the full distance of a trail.

Accessories: essentials to keep you moving forward!

On top of suitable socks, a head torch and other accessories, a trail running backpack is of course essential. You must carry a water and food supply, a mobile phone, a survival blanket, waterproof gloves, a beanie, a cap or bandana. More than enough to fill your pack!

At Cimalp, you'll find neck gaiters, arm warmers and a range of different beanies.

For those who like to push forward with trail poles, note that you will need to carry them for the entire duration of the race.

In conclusion, now that your kit list is sorted, keep up your training! The UTMB® is a demanding race for which physical preparation must not be neglected.

Follow our handy guide to help you prepare for the UTMB®.

And if you need one last piece of kit or some last-minute race advice, come and find Cimalp at the ultra-trail expo in Chamonix: from Monday 25 to Friday 29 August!
