When packing your race bag for the UTMB, there are essential accessories you must not forget to include. Starting with all the mandatory survival and safety items, followed by a few additional accessories that will be very useful for a smooth race.

Safety and survival equipment
The list of safety and survival equipment is dictated by the UTMB regulations. Missing any one of these essential items could lead to your disqualification and prevent you from starting the race on the day. This list is therefore to be taken very seriously — do not cut corners on equipment that can save lives and spare everyone unnecessary worry and anxiety. It includes a smartphone, a whistle, a survival blanket, as well as bandaging supplies and 2 lights (such as head torches for example) to provide light during the night and at dusk.
Other additional accessories to consider
This list is not compulsory, but it is strongly recommended by most experts and by the UTMB organisation. It is therefore advisable to include these items in your race bag on race day:
- Your smartphone can have the Livetrail 4Runners app installed and configured: it enables live tracking of your position and makes it easier for rescue teams to locate you in the event of a serious problem.
- Also pack an external battery (power bank) for your phone. There are now some excellent lightweight options available (often under 200 grams and fitting in the palm of your hand for the best ones), giving a real boost to your battery life.
- Pack spare warm clothing, essential in cold and wet conditions or in the event of injury. These items should not be overlooked and belong in every self-respecting trail runner's pack.
- Poles in case of rain or snow for your safety on slippery terrain. If you choose to take poles, it is for the entire duration of the race. It is forbidden to start without poles and pick them up along the way. There may be restrictions on using poles in certain sections.
- Essential trail gloves to protect your hands
- Vaseline or anti-chafing cream to apply to areas subject to friction that may become irritated over hours of racing.
- A pair of trail sunglasses will also be important to bring along
- A minimum amount of £20 or more to cover any unexpected expenses.
- A reusable bowl and a personal cup of at least 15cl, which is compulsory (bottles or flasks with caps are not accepted).
- A GPS watch, which can be useful for navigation and following a route.
- A knife or scissors to cut the elastic adhesive bandage.
- A small sewing kit can be useful if you need to make an urgent repair.
