Is it a good idea to run without socks?

Is it a good idea to run without socks?

24 May. 2025

Est-ce une bonne idée de courir sans chaussettes ?

Thinking about running without socks to reduce heat or gain comfort? You're not alone. Some runners want to travel lighter or move towards a more "natural" stride. Yet this practice exposes your feet to very real risks. Here's everything you need to know before leaving your socks in the drawer.

What are the risks?

With every stride, your foot rubs against the shoe. Without a sock, your skin takes the full force of these repeated friction points, leading to hot spots and then blisters. These lesions occur when the dermis, weakened by heat and moisture, gives way under pressure and allows fluid to build up between its layers.

The internal seams of the shoe also become a source of irritation. Often invisible, they eventually cause open sores, particularly around the tongue and ankles.

Running without socks also increases your foot's vulnerability in intense heat. Skin softened by moisture offers little resistance to mechanical stress. Without an adaptation period, it won't thicken enough to handle the kilometres.

Without a textile barrier, external debris — sand, dust, small stones — penetrate the shoe more easily. These intrusions cause immediate discomfort and can even lead to injury.

Finally, the absence of a sock disrupts moisture management. Dampness lingers, clamminess sets in, and comfort deteriorates. This persistent moisture also increases the risk of infection in the event of a wound.

In summary, running without socks exposes you to:

  • A high risk of blisters on contact zones
  • Irritation and open sores caused by internal seams
  • Poor moisture management, encouraging dampness
  • Dirt intrusions that can cause injury
  • A breeding ground for infections, especially over long distances

A good sock is essential for running

A technical sock designed for trail or running protects your foot, regulates temperature and prevents injuries. It forms a true shield between the foot and the shoe.

Avoid two types of material:

  • Cotton, which retains moisture and worsens chafing
  • Pure polyester, which prevents your foot from breathing

Choose a sock in your size, neither too loose nor too tight. Go for a model with left/right foot differentiation, which adapts perfectly to the shape of the foot.

Socks made from COOLMAX® technical fibre offer several advantages:

  • Good breathability and rapid moisture wicking
  • Anti-odour properties useful on long outings
  • Reinforced zones at the heel and toe to limit chafing
  • Flat seams that eliminate pressure points
  • Reinforcement at the Achilles tendon
  • Lightly cushioned sole for better shock absorption

These features improve your comfort, reduce the risk of injury, and maintain a feeling of freshness even in warm weather. On road or trail, a technical sock remains a valuable ally for protecting your feet.

How to avoid chafing when running without socks?

If you still want to run without socks, take a gradual and well-protected approach. Your skin needs time to adapt to this new direct contact with the shoe. Start with short distances to allow the dermis to toughen up.

To prevent chafing, apply an anti-chafing cream to sensitive areas: heel, base of the toes, ankles, Achilles tendon. Vaseline is also a good option. Apply it generously before your run, especially if you're heading out on a long-distance trail.

Add straps to protect pressure points:

  • Around the Achilles tendon
  • At the base of the toes
  • On the ankles or any area of prolonged contact

These strips absorb friction and create a protective layer between the skin and the shoe. Also consider choosing a shoe model designed to be worn without socks. Some feature a softer, seamless interior mesh and a smoother insole.

After every run, clean the inside of your shoes to remove any dust or debris. A single forgotten particle can cause injury on your next run.

Even with all these precautions, running without socks remains a demanding practice. Anti-chafing cream, Vaseline and straps offer minimal protection, but they are no substitute for a good pair of technical socks. These provide extra security, improve the feeling of freshness and effectively reduce the risk of skin injuries.
