Shorts or trousers: which is the best choice for climbing?

Shorts or trousers: which is the best choice for climbing?

Short ou pantalon : quel est le meilleur choix pour l’escalade

Choosing the right climbing clothing matters. Ill-suited gear can quickly make the activity uncomfortable and hold back your progress. When temperatures rise, it can be tempting to go for lighter clothing. But what is the better choice between shorts and trousers for climbing?

What type of clothing should you choose for climbing?

To start climbing, it is important to choose the right kit. Several factors should be taken into account. First, go for garments in stretch fabric, which guarantee good freedom of movement. A fitted cut also helps prevent fabric from catching on holds.

Choose breathable fabrics that wick moisture effectively, especially if you climb in summer. Don't overlook durability either. Go for garments designed to resist abrasion and featuring reinforcements on exposed areas.

In climbing, certain details can make all the difference. A flat or elasticated waistband offers more comfort under a harness than a standard waistband. Pockets are also very practical on climbing shorts or trousers. Some models also feature zipped pockets, accessible even when wearing a harness.

For the lower body, several options are worth considering. Shorts are light — ideal in summer — and provide good freedom of movement. Many female climbers wear leggings for their stretch and comfort. They are perfect indoors or on low-abrasion rock. Finally, trousers offer full protection, whether you climb indoors or outdoors.

The advantages of climbing shorts

Climbing shorts are highly valued for their lightness, comfort and freedom of movement. Among all climbing trousers and shorts, shorts stand out for their ability to let the legs breathe. Their short cut makes them ideal for intense effort or sessions in hot conditions

Furthermore, being made from less fabric makes it lighter. This avoids any feeling of bulk during effort. Freedom of movement is one of the key advantages of climbing shorts. The absence of fabric around the knees and thighs makes high leg raises easier, as well as dynamic movements. When choosing your shorts, we recommend opting for a slightly relaxed cut with a longer crotch, to give you maximum freedom of movement.

These many advantages make shorts a must for climbing. You can wear them for bouldering, both indoors and outdoors. In this discipline, freedom of movement and lightness are paramount, and the risk of prolonged abrasion is lower. Shorts can also be used on sport routes in warm weather, when protection against grazing is not a priority.

On the other hand, climbing shorts are not really recommended for multi-pitch routes or on abrasive rock. You risk grazing your skin, getting burned or cut. In that case, trousers are preferable to protect your legs.

When to opt for trousers over shorts?

Despite their many advantages, climbing shorts are not recommended in all situations. Trousers are more widely used thanks to their versatility and, above all, their protective qualities. They prevent grazing, offer protection against weather conditions, and provide more reinforcements on exposed areas such as the knees and seat.

The difference between indoor and outdoor climbing depends in part on clothing choice. Indoors, where conditions are more stable, shorts or leggings are often sufficient. Outdoors, trousers are generally preferable, particularly for multi-pitch or traditional climbing. Prolonged contact with the wall or surrounding vegetation can result in injury. Trousers are also useful in cool weather, wind, or to protect against sunburn.

To choose the right climbing trousers, we recommend opting for a close-fitting model. Go for a tapered cut, which limits restriction and allows precise movement.

If you climb outdoors in warm weather or on moderately abrasive rock, another option is 3/4-length trousers. They offer a good compromise between shorts and full-length trousers, protecting the knees while still allowing airflow.

The choice between climbing shorts or trousers depends on the type of climbing, weather conditions and personal preference. Shorts offer comfort and freedom, so go for them when conditions allow. Trousers provide more complete protection against abrasion, sun and cold. You may prefer them for multi-pitch climbing or in cooler weather. Either way, don't hesitate to try different options to find what suits you best.
