The benefits of compression socks

24 Jul. 2015

L’utilité des chaussettes de compression

You're certainly seeing more and more elite athletes wearing high socks and wondering why — and what the point is. If seasoned athletes use them, it's surely because they deliver real gains in efficiency, comfort and recovery. Let's explore the reasons together, and why even at a more modest level you can benefit enormously for a reasonable investment.

The physiology

Blood circulates in both directions between the heart and the rest of the body: on the way out, the heart pumps blood to your organs, but on the return journey the heart acts as a vacuum pump (the cardiac cavity handles most of the blood's return) — though in reality, depending on the area of the body, this is more or less challenging. If you think about it, from the ankles, blood must travel vertically upward by about 1.2 metres to reach the heart: no small feat! To manage this, our bodies are equipped with a system of locks and valves that divides the total effort into a series of small increments of just a few centimetres. On top of this, there is another important characteristic to understand. There are two venous return circulation networks: a deep network within the muscles, and a superficial network between the skin and the muscles. The deep, or intramuscular, network has a powerful mechanism: every muscle contraction compresses the veins and pushes blood upward from valve to valve. In general, unless there is a pre-existing venous condition, this causes few problems. The superficial network, however, lacks this natural compression system, and the risk of blood pooling is very real — leading to toxins, oedema and leg pain.

How does it work?

Compression socks create an "artificial" force around the skin and flatten the superficial venous network, producing an effect that prevents blood pooling and promotes venous return. The recognised benefits for people with varicose veins and phlebitis have simply been extrapolated for athletes. On the market, there are two main types of compression socks. The first type has no foot section and stops at the ankle, making them better suited for use during exercise. The others are more suited (though not exclusively) for recovery, feature a full foot section, and are comparable to conventional socks.

In practice

During exercise and competition you can use this type of product: it will have a substantial effect on your comfort and recovery quality after exertion — though, clearly, the impact on performance will be marginal, unless you are competing at a very high level where every small percentage counts. That said, according to some practitioners, the gain in terms of muscle support is essential and limits the effects of muscle bounce, offering a sense of efficiency that some athletes can no longer do without. For recovery, the benefit is very real and the positive post-exercise effect has been medically proven. Compression drastically limits blood pooling in the relevant areas and prevents oedema (even invisible to the naked eye), as well as the sensation of heavy legs, delivering a very significant recovery gain. It should be noted that for maximum effectiveness, recovery socks must be put on immediately after exercise — not left until later: this is essential for optimising recovery and avoiding leg fatigue.

The benefits of compression for athletes are well established, and its use is widely recommended, offering a genuine and significant advantage — particularly in all endurance sports. But don't think this is limited to seasoned athletes. The occasional walker, or long-distance hiker, will find real comfort each evening after their daily stage by using recovery socks. These will optimise recovery and make it easier to get going again the next day, eliminating that unpleasant feeling of fatigue and heavy legs.
