Comment s'habiller en Inde : nos conseils pour un voyage confortable et adapté

India is a vast and diverse country, with highly varied climates. When planning a trip to India, choosing the right clothing is essential to fully enjoy your experience while staying comfortable and respectful of local traditions. Whether you're travelling in the north, the south, or in mountainous regions, it's important to prepare well. Here are some tips on what to wear in India, to make sure you're ready to face the different climate conditions while respecting local customs.

The best season to visit India

India has climatic conditions that vary enormously depending on the region and the season. It is therefore difficult to define an ideal time to explore this country, but three distinct seasons can be identified: hot, wet and cold.

  • Hot season (February to May): Temperatures can reach extreme highs, particularly in the north of the country, with peaks of up to 45°C in May.
  • Monsoon season (late May to October): This period is marked by heavy downpours, storms and still-warm temperatures.
  • Cool season (October to January): Temperatures are milder, particularly in the north, and pleasant in the south.

The best time to visit India is generally between November and February, when the climate is more pleasant. If you don't mind more extreme conditions, travelling outside this season can offer better prices, though you'll need to be prepared for the heat or humidity.

Clothing to pack for a trip to India

Choosing your daytime clothing

When travelling in India, heat is a key factor, but evenings can also be cool. It's therefore essential to favour versatile clothing that can be adjusted to suit temperature variations. To know what to wear in India, the three-layer system is ideal. A base layer for moisture management, a mid layer for warmth, and an outer layer for protection against wind and rain.

Trousers and T-shirts: Choose lightweight, breathable trousers, such as convertible styles that can be turned into shorts. These trousers are particularly practical and allow you to adapt quickly to temperature changes. Avoid cotton and denim, which, while comfortable, retain moisture and dry slowly.

Go for long-sleeve technical T-shirts, which will protect you from sunburn while remaining breathable and hardwearing. These quick-dry garments will help you stay cool, avoid unpleasant odours and manage the heat more effectively.

Useful accessories: A lightweight scarf or shawl is an essential accessory. It will protect you from the sun and cover you when visiting temples.

Mosquito protection: If you're sensitive to insect bites, consider packing clothing made with mosquito-repellent fabric. This is the ideal solution to avoid bites, especially if you're travelling in areas with a risk of insect-borne diseases.

What to wear in India for evenings and nights

Temperatures can drop quickly in certain regions, particularly at altitude. In the evening, bring a warm windproof jacket, along with comfortable trousers and a base-layer top to keep you warm. It can also be useful to pack warm socks, a beanie and lightweight gloves for cool nights. This will help you maintain your body heat during the night, especially if you're camping or going on long hikes.

The right footwear for a trip to India

For optimal comfort in the city, go for open sandals during the day. They're ideal for the heat and let your feet breathe, especially when walking in hot conditions. If you're planning to hike, opt for lightweight walking shoes that offer both comfort and ventilation. Make sure they're already well broken in to avoid blisters and sore feet.

If you're heading to colder or mountainous areas, sturdy trekking shoes will be essential. Choose waterproof models to keep you protected in wet conditions.

What to wear in India when visiting places of worship

India is a country rich in religious and cultural traditions. When visiting temples, mosques and other places of worship, it is important to respect local customs.

  • Covering your head: In Sikh temples, both men and women must cover their heads. Bring a scarf or lightweight hat that you can easily adjust for these occasions.
  • Avoiding leather: In certain temples, particularly Jain places of worship, it is advisable not to wear visible leather items (belts, bags, shoes).
  • Removing your shoes: In almost all places of worship, you are required to remove your shoes before entering. It is therefore practical to wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.
