What are the benefits of cross-country skiing?
Cross-country skiing is a full-body workout that strengthens the cardiovascular system and improves heart and lung health. Skiing regularly can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve endurance. It also works several muscle groups, including the legs, glutes, arms and shoulders, helping to build strength and muscle tone. The activity can improve coordination, flexibility and balance, while placing relatively little impact on the joints. And being outdoors means you can enjoy the snowy scenery.
How do you look after your cross-country skiing equipment?
Regular maintenance of your cross-country skiing equipment helps it last longer and perform at its best on the trails. After each use, brush snow and dirt off your skis. Avoid cleaning them with hot water, as this could damage the bases. For a thorough service, it’s best to use a professional.
They can wax and sharpen your skis to improve glide and grip on the trails. Store your skis somewhere cool and dry, away from heat sources. If possible, keep them in a protective bag to prevent scratches. Clean your poles regularly with water and mild soap. Check the condition of their tips and replace them if needed. Clean the inside of your ski boots regularly, too.
Where can you go cross-country skiing?
You can go cross-country skiing in many regions of France on specially prepared trails. Look for cross-country skiing centres with the Nordic France label, which rates Nordic sites from one to four fir trees against four main criteria: the quality of the ski area, the range of activities, durable development and the quality of on-site services. Many alpine skiing resorts also have cross-country skiing trails. These are generally groomed and maintained regularly to provide good skiing conditions.
