HOW TO CHOOSE A TREK TENT?
Choosing a trek tent is no small decision — it is an important safety item that will allow you to sleep while sheltering from bad weather. Here are our tips to help you make the right choice.
As soon as you plan to head out for several days, whether alone or in a group, the tent for your bivvy will be a very important piece of kit. Here are the criteria to consider when making your choice:
- Tent weight and bulk: you will be carrying it in your trek backpack over many kilometres and across several days — it is a significant weight in your pack and your overall kit.
- Number of tent berths: there are 1-person, 2-person and 3-person trek tents (beyond that you are looking at camping tents, which are not designed to be carried in a backpack). You can also opt for a 3-person tent for 2 if you want a bit more space and comfort, but that adds weight!
- Thermal performance and weather protection: 4-season tents generally refer to products with strong waterproofing, a robust build, greater ground insulation and the ability to bear the weight of snow. 4-season tents can be used year-round, even in cold conditions. 3-season tents are used from spring to autumn but are not suited to winter outings. Beyond that, there are more specialist products: ultralight tents for summer or expedition tents for mountaineering and high-altitude conditions.
- Tent shape: tunnel or dome. The dome is more spacious and can be freestanding (so it can be set up anywhere), while the tunnel tent offers a more compact space but is lighter.
