How to choose your running socks?

How to choose your running socks?

20 Jul. 2017

Although they are mindful of the comfort and safety of their feet during races, runners sometimes tend to underestimate the importance of running socks. What runners often try to overlook is that these accessories are hugely important. Socks are a key extension of the lower limbs — a crucial element for your comfort. They keep your feet dry and protect against friction and blisters: choosing them carefully is absolutely essential. running socks

What should you consider when choosing your running socks?

The quality running socks are essential for protecting feet from heat build-up, excessive perspiration, and blister formation. Allocating a decent budget to purchasing these accessories should therefore be a priority for runners, just as much as investing in quality shoes. To choose your running socks wisely, here are the key factors to consider:
  1. Material: To keep runners safe, it is essential that your running socks are comfortable. Most socks are now made from Nylon, a fibre that is generally combined with others to offer different properties:running socks
    • Spandex or elastane provides stretchiness and even compression in certain models — this material is excellent for keeping socks firmly in place inside your shoes.
    • Cooldry® fibre helps limit foot perspiration and delivers a sensation of freshness.
    • Other combinations can be used to reduce slipping inside the shoe, for example reinforced panels to limit wear, or a lining to reduce friction and the risk of blisters.
  2. Shoe size: As socks are stretchy, they generally cover several sizes — manufacturers provide a size guide to help you choose. Bear in mind that your feet tend to swell after a few minutes of running, so it is important to feel comfortable in the socks when trying them on.
  3. Thickness: Good-quality running socks have an optimised thickness — neither too thin nor too bulky. Too thick and they risk cramping the shoes and compressing the feet. Too thin and they do not offer enough protection and may wear through within a matter of days.
  4. Comfort level: It is worth knowing that running socks should be adapted to the seasons. While some models are perfectly suited to winter, others are specifically designed to be worn in summer. The aim here is to find the ideal pair based on the weather conditions. To ensure an excellent level of performance during runs, there is simply no room for frozen feet or overheated ones. Still on the subject of comfort, it is important to choose running socks that perfectly hug the feet and ankles. This ensures optimal support and reduces the risk of slipping.
  5. Style: When choosing running socks, fit should not be taken lightly. The best ones are those that are seamless. As well as being uncomfortable, seams can injure the feet through repeated friction. Five-toe socks are an excellent solution for perfectly following the shape of the foot and minimising friction as much as possible. The ideal model is also one where the most heavily stressed areas are reinforced (heels and toe boxes). Protection is therefore maximised and the appearance of blisters is reduced.

What criteria should have no influence on the choice of running socks?

Although the following elements are important, they are not necessarily factors to consider when choosing your running socks.
  1. Colour: It is true that some colours are described as "warm" and others as "cold", but this should in no way affect the choice of running socks. These "impressions" have not yet been scientifically proven to this day. In terms of comfort and safety, there is therefore no difference between choosing red accessories or opting for white ones.
  2. Patterns: Some people claim that patterned fabrics are always thicker than plain-coloured ones. But just like colour variety, the presence of patterns has no impact on fabric quality, let alone foot comfort.
  3. Price: There is a common tendency to assume that the most expensive products are always the best. This theory may hold true for other accessories, but not when it comes to choosing running socks. There are affordable racing socks that are incredibly comfortable, while others are overpriced yet fail to deliver the desired level of comfort. Basing your choice on purchase price is therefore not a sound strategy for finding the ideal running socks.
running socks   Understanding the importance of running socks is essential. Beyond protecting the feet, they also contribute to an athlete's performance during races. They should never be taken lightly. They are the perfect companion for your running shoes that will allow you to rack up the kilometres with maximum comfort.
