Choosing a fleece as a mid-layer to fight the cold

Choosing a fleece as a mid-layer to fight the cold

25 Oct. 2018

As the good weather fades and the thermometer starts to drop, it's time to think about kitting yourself out properly against the cold that's on its way, sooner or later. For this, fleece jackets are often ideal because they combine many advantages that we'll look at here. They are very often the perfect second layer for any sporting activity — or simply for going about your daily life in the city.

What is a fleece?

So-called "fleece" fibres are used in garments of the same name (fleeces that can have short or long pile), but also in softshell jackets (a kind of windproof, water-repellent fleece — read our article on softshell). You'll also find fleece trousers, gloves and hats. Fleece is also sometimes used as a lining in certain garments. Fleece fibres are generally made from polyester, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and other synthetic fibres (sometimes recycled).

The fleece jacket and its features

Generally lighter than a softshell, a fleece jacket doesn't take up much room in a travel bag. Thanks to its simplicity, it can be worn as an outer layer when there's neither wind nor rain. However, it's also very practical as a mid-layer, especially in wet conditions when worn under a waterproof garment. It's this use as a second layer that is particularly effective against the cold. Made from synthetic material, fleece comes in different weights. Some models are heavier or lighter than others. Along the same lines, some fleeces are thicker and therefore provide far more warmth. One small drawback: the warmer it is, the less breathable it becomes.

Fleece comes in three different types:

The heavyweight fleece, with a density of 300 g/m² offering maximum warmth in winter conditions. While it forms an effective barrier against the cold, it doesn't wick away perspiration well enough. Its considerable thickness is therefore a limitation on the comfort it can provide. This type is not well suited to physical activities requiring a great deal of mobility. The lightweight fleece, with a weight of 100 g/m². This is the most suitable version for wearing under a windshell or jacket. It doesn't provide a great deal of warmth, but it offers far more comfort thanks to its low bulk. It's also the ideal fleece for intense physical activity in the depths of winter (hiking, skating, etc.) The mid-weight fleece, which is more breathable than the heavyweight and warmer than the lightweight. More versatile than the other two, it can be worn as an outer layer in mildly cool conditions, as well as a mid-layer in freezing temperatures.

The advantages of a fleece jacket

There are many advantages to getting a fleece jacket as a second layer as soon as temperatures start to dip:
  • Highly breathable: it easily wicks away moisture and perspiration
  • Dries very quickly: a natural capacity linked to its breathability
  • Excellent insulation: even when wet, a fleece jacket is a true thermal barrier
  • Affordable: an accessible product with excellent value for money
  • Easy care and washing
  • Durable: a product that is very hard to damage and has a long service life

When should you choose a fleece?

To choose between a fleece and a softshell, certain criteria stand out in terms of practicality, functionality, and comfort. A fleece is chosen for its versatility — worn as an outer layer in mild conditions and as a mid-layer in bad weather or cold. It's equally well suited to sport and everyday activities. Many people are also won over by its cosy, soft feel. For some, this is a strong argument compared to other products such as down jackets or softshell jackets. It also remains relatively lightweight and compact, which is another reason to choose it when you want to save space in a travel bag or travel light.
