How to dress for snowshoe hiking?

06 Sep. 2022

Snowshoeing is the perfect activity to recharge in winter. It allows you to keep up your hiking when there is snow on the ground. When choosing your kit, the best approach is to use the three-layer system and adjust the level of warmth according to your effort. To fully understand this system, we explain how to dress for snowshoeing in winter.

Dressing the upper body

Snowshoeing is generally practised when temperatures are around 0 °C. Your first layer can consist of a t-shirt in synthetic fibres, whose role is to efficiently absorb and wick away moisture. In very cold conditions, a long-sleeved t-shirt in merino wool provides better warmth.

A micro-fleece or fleece works perfectly as a second layer. It is warmer than a standard jumper, can be more or less thick depending on the temperature, and can be put on and taken off very easily when fully zipped. For greater freedom of movement, you can also opt for a sleeveless fleece.

Finally, a waterproof and windproof third layer is ideal. Go for a Gore-Tex® jacket or equivalent membrane. It protects you in the event of snowfall, rain, cold and wind. For added breathability and protection, the jacket can feature underarm zip vents and a peaked hood.

When the weather is mild or there is a lot of wind, you can also opt for a fleece-lined softshell jacket. It has a windproof function and keeps you warm while allowing great freedom of movement.

Dressing the lower body

A good pair of trousers for snowshoeing should be water-repellent, lightweight and allow good freedom of movement. You can choose a classic hiking trouser and wear waterproof overtrousers on top. This option lets you remove the overtrousers when the weather is favourable. Another option is trousers specifically designed for winter hiking. These warmer trousers will perfectly complete your snowshoeing outfit and let you enjoy your winter hikes.

When it is very cold, you can add a base layer under your trousers. It provides extra insulation and protection. Synthetic fibre is very stretchy, while merino wool is more comfortable.

When snowshoeing, avoid wearing alpine skiing trousers, which are not very breathable and too warm.

Accessories for snowshoeing

In addition to your snowshoes and your upper and lower body clothing, you need to kit yourself out with certain accessories. Gaiters are essential, for example, in deep snow or powder. They prevent snow from getting into your shoes.

A beanie and neck gaiter help protect your head and neck from the cold. The neck gaiter has the added advantage of doubling as a face covering or headband. We recommend avoiding scarves, which don't wick moisture well. For sun protection, you can go for sunglasses or a ski mask, which also offers great protection against wind.

Finally, choosing good hiking shoes should not be overlooked. Go for high-cut shoes that cover the ankles and are waterproof to keep your feet dry.

Dressing for snowshoeing is relatively straightforward. The main goal is to protect yourself from the cold and choose clothing that is at least somewhat breathable, so you can hike in good conditions.
