Bien se préparer pour l'UTMB

UTMB – Our tips for proper preparation

Running an ultra-trail like the UTMB is a genuine challenge that demands honest self-reflection about the right preparation. From training in advance to kit and nutrition before, during, and after — every single aspect matters. Here are our key tips for getting well prepared for the UTMB (Ultra Trail du Mont White).

Every year, this major trail event at the heart of the Mont White massif brings together thousands of runners. It revolves around 8 race formats, all finishing in Chamonix under the iconic village arch!

  • UTMB, among the most globally renowned trails, starting from Chamonix: 174km and 9900m+
  • CCC, starting from Courmayeur: 101km and 6050m+
  • OCC, starting from Orsières: 60km and 3500m+
  • TDS, starting from Courmayeur: 145km and 9500m+
  • ETC, starting from Courmayeur: 15km and 1200m+
  • PTL, starting from Chamonix: 300km and 25000m+ (a unique multi-day format)
  • MCC, starting from Martigny-Combes in Switzerland: 40km and 2350m+
  • YCC, for the youngest runners: 15km and 1200m+

Among these races, the UTMB remains the flagship mountain race for all elite athletes and seasoned ultra-trail runners! Its elevation gain and breathtaking scenery are now benchmarks in the world of trail running. Like the Marathon du Mont White, it takes place at the heart of the French massif and stands shoulder to shoulder with the Diagonale des Fous (Grand Raid de la Réunion) and the Traversée des Templiers.

preparing for the UTMB

Preparation in advance

For runners tackling this distance for the first time at UTMB, the trail preparation phase is vital. It must be as much physical — to avoid injury — as mental, so you're not caught off guard by the adventure that lies ahead.

Being physically ready

For example, going from a mountain marathon to an ultra means an extra 60km and a positive elevation gain that is undoubtedly more demanding. Between ascents and descents, your strides along the trails will be countless before you reach the finish line. To guarantee finishing such a mountain running race, consistent training is a must. Working with a coach is strongly recommended when tackling distances like these.

Building endurance, developing better effort management, and gaining experience of how your body responds are all invaluable assets. The best ultra-trail runners can challenge for the podium because they hold all the right cards. Self-knowledge is everything.

Building mental strength

Mental preparation should not be overlooked. Learning about the trail race route, aid stations, and the weather conditions awaiting participants can reduce stress both before and during the race. The more a runner mentally visualises the course, the better they will handle the terrain. Also bear in mind the time limits and cut-off times imposed along the route.

Other details, such as mandatory kit and the correct use of race accessories like poles, should also be considered before the start. The better prepared you are mentally, the less you will be affected by physical and mental stress.

Taking on the race with confidence

The weather

Another genuine race advantage is knowing your environment.

Checking the weather forecast a few days before the race, right up to the eve of the start, is highly recommended. It will help you prepare better for changing conditions. Depending on the year, UTMB runners may face the event in near-Nordic conditions or in intense, even scorching heat.

Every year, organisers work hard to put in place alternative routes that respect the distance, elevation, or race time in extreme cases. But overriding the forces of nature is never straightforward.

Kit & gear

To stand a chance of finishing one of the most extraordinary mountain races in the world, it takes more than just starting your watch and grinding out each kilometre. Setting off with the right gear is essential.

Choosing the right kit plays a key role in your race performance. Start with a solid pair of running shoes. Needless to say, it's never a good idea to test new trail shoes on race day! On the clothing front, go for a full trail kit from a mountain equipment specialist who can kit you out from head to toe. You'll be ready to take on wind, rain, and heat.

When it comes to accessories like poles, they will help you tackle those metres of elevation gain. Testing all your kit before race day helps avoid any nasty surprises or discomfort. For the flagship race, make sure to check the full UTMB mandatory kit list on their website.

Finally, don't forget to find out the date and location for race bib collection. It would be a real shame to have been selected in the ballot and trained so hard, only to miss the start due to a simple admin oversight…

UTMB

For those supporting a runner, it's always worth looking into hiking options nearby while waiting for runners to come through, or checking the prize-giving schedule. It's usually a brilliant, festive occasion!

These few pointers will help you feel more confident on the start line! For more tips, come and find the Cimalp team at the Ultra-trail® Village 2026 in Chamonix.
