Long-distance hiking — where to go?

Long-distance hiking — where to go?

05 Aug. 2013

There are many incredible destinations around the world — ideal for hiking and offering stunning scenery.

MONTENEGRO

Among the countries brimming with wonders, Montenegro stands out. One of the first places to explore is undoubtedly the Orjen massif with its varied trails. There is also the Subra mountain with its many peaks, such as Veliko Kabao and Malo Kabao. Hikers will encounter significant elevation gain and trails are generally covered in vegetation. Visitors and hikers alike will surely appreciate the beech forests. The enormous natural caves also make for a spectacular landscape. Durmitor National Park is another point of interest, as it is an important heritage site of Montenegro. The Velji Garac range, the Bay of Kotor and the Adriatic Sea are also worth exploring. Numerous remnants of ancient civilisation form some truly impressive backdrops.

Any hiker will be captivated by Slovenia — it's a place that stays with you. The Dolomites refuge is well worth a visit, as are the towns of Venzone and Gemona. Many other historic sites can also be found throughout this remarkable country.

BETWEEN SWITZERLAND AND ITALY

The crossing from Switzerland into Italy is a route highly valued by hikers. The Swiss Alps put them to the test with their temperature variations. The Valmaggia and the descent towards Robiei are sure to delight. The ascent of Pce di Braga and the descent of Piano del Peccia are also heavily travelled. To reach Italy, you must also climb via the Via Alpina, where the elevation changes are significant. Along the way, the Cabane del Lago is an exceptional spot for the hiker. You can spend the night there before setting off again the next morning. A small kitchen and basic bunks are available. A lake is nearby. The approximately 600 m climb of the Passo del Mauro and the Brochetta di Pianca, along with their slopes, offer stunning scenery. Some hikers choose to stop during the ascent of the Alp d'Aiol to enjoy a magnificent natural spa, complete with whirlpools, a few waterfalls and a spectacular pool. The crossing of the Soazza valley is another option that will delight hikers. Finally, the trail to the Passo de Forcela and the valley climbing towards the pass will be the last challenge before reaching Italy.

CROATIA

Croatia is also a country with many assets when it comes to hiking. The Makarska Riviera and the sea bordered by limestone rocks are among the most interesting settings. The Sutvid valley also offers a fairly demanding ascent or descent. A hiking route along the road to Ploce or Dubrovnik is another original itinerary, as is a visit to this ancient city. Croatia remains a benchmark destination for hiking.
