Packing your first aid kit for a mountain hiking trip

09 Jul. 2013

Faire sa trousse à pharmacie pour une randonnée en montagne

Whatever the type of hiking, it's important to always carry a first aid kit with you. Better to be prepared than to run into trouble on the trail! Here is a non-exhaustive but sufficient list for hiking trips of one to three days.

Emergency follow-up:

  • A pencil + an assessment sheet

Before intervening:

  • Disposable latex gloves
  • A bottle of hand sanitiser gel

Specific emergency equipment for the first aid kit:

  • An emergency haemostatic dressing
  • One or more emergency blankets
  • A triangular scarf
  • A pocket mask (for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation)

Small equipment:

  • Cord
  • Rubbish bag
  • Swiss army knife
  • Headlamp

"For patching up minor injuries":

  • Splinter tweezers
  • Hand warmers
  • A chlorhexidine disinfectant spray
  • Cut-to-size plasters
  • Double-skin plasters
  • Adhesive sutures
  • Betadine in single-dose units
  • Gauze pads
  • Sticking plaster
  • Tubular bandage
  • Scissors
  • Stretchy adhesive bandages (Elastoplast)
  • Arnica cream
  • Homéoplasmine

Medicines:

  • Anti-diarrhoeal medication
  • Eye drops in single-dose units
  • Antispasmodic medication
  • Paracetamol
  • Saline solution in single-dose units
Also remember to always go out with a companion, or failing that, let someone know of the location of your excursion and its route.
