As part of choosing your shoes for the UTMB®, you will also need to consider the question of spare shoes. This topic covers several aspects that we will detail for you to help guide your decisions.
A spare pair of shoes for the race
It is not unreasonable to plan a spare pair of shoes alongside your main trail shoes for racing. You are not immune to an accident or some kind of issue with your shoes. Without reliable shoes, there is no UTMB®! Plan to buy 2 identical pairs of shoes and alternate between them during your training so that you don't have a completely new pair on race day. Running in a brand-new pair is not recommended and your feet won't be used to them. This second pair can accompany you all the way to the start area and you can even choose to slip it into your race bag for added security. It is very unlikely you'll need it, but it's not impossible — and it would be a shame to have to give up after 30 kilometres of racing, for example, because one of your shoes developed a problem or caught a sharp stone!
A pair of shoes for the pre-race period
Many competitors dislike putting on their trail shoes too long before the start. That's understandable — it's also part of the runner's ritual in the tension that builds before a big event. It will therefore be wise to have a pair of shoes for your warm-up or for the entire waiting period before the start. Then hand this pair to someone close to you or leave it in your bag at the start.
A pair of shoes for after the race
It is truly a relief to take off your trail shoes (even comfortable ones) after hours of racing and dozens of kilometres covered. Some people love slipping into simple sandals or a well-worn, very comfortable pair of running shoes. Whatever your preference, plan a pair of shoes in which you'll be comfortable — for stretching, unwinding, attending the prize ceremony or simply sharing a meal with friends after the finish.
