What clothing should you choose for freeride?

Quels vêtements choisir pour le freeride ?
The winter season is approaching and the urge to strap on skis and carve down the slopes — or why not try the off-piste experience and go freeride — is already in the air. To make the most of your next outings, you need to be not only experienced and fit, but also well equipped from head to toe. So before heading out for big days in the mountains, here are some clothing tips specific to this discipline to ensure comfort, wellbeing and safety. freeride clothing

Choosing the right base layer

First and foremost, don't overlook the choice of your first layer — your base layer. It may not be visible, but it plays a crucial role in thermal insulation and moisture-wicking from perspiration. Always opt for technical base layers, meaning those specifically designed for this purpose, and avoid cotton, which dries too slowly and wicks moisture too poorly. New fabrics, such as a bamboo and silk blend, combine high breathability and great comfort with a soft feel against the skin and optimal thermal insulation. Don't hesitate to go for long-leg bottoms, which will effectively protect your legs — a key factor for your performance. Depending on the outside temperature, you can choose a second layer that is more or less warm. Bear in mind that you'll be exerting yourself physically and therefore generating a fair amount of body heat. So there's no need to overdress if you're lucky enough to have mild temperatures and sunshine. Lightweight fleece jackets or synthetic down pieces can more than fill that role. Pay attention to the thickness of this garment so as not to feel too bulky if you choose to wear 3 layers.

The ideal outer layer

The outer layer is primarily there to protect you against all weather conditions and to vent moisture and body heat. It is essential that this layer shields you from the most aggressive elements — namely cold wind and snow moisture. For example, go for jackets that are waterproof to 20,000 mm or ultrashell jackets with perfect waterproofing. They will provide strong protection without restricting your freedom of movement or ease on skis. Softshell ski jackets with a fleece lining are also perfectly suited when the risk of strong cold winds or heavy precipitation is ruled out. The go-to trouser for a freeride session On the trouser front, choose high-performance options: you need robust fabrics (resistant to abrasion and potential falls) and enough stretch (so your movement and flexibility aren't impeded). Choose, if possible, a trouser that is waterproof to 20,000 mm to protect you from moisture when in contact with the snow, or kit yourself out with a waterproof over-trouser. The thermal insulation of your trouser is essential, as legs cool down fastest during breaks or chairlift rides, and they are also highly sensitive to the bite of cold and wind at full speed. On the accessories front, don't forget to protect your extremities by choosing quality gloves, a suitable beanie and the right ski socks for your comfort.

Choosing your clothing: safety as a priority

To minimise risks, don't hesitate to choose clothing equipped with technologies such as RECCO® reflectors. This technology works with a chip integrated into your garment: impossible to lose, it requires no maintenance, works continuously and has an unlimited lifespan. More and more ski resorts are equipped with RECCO® detectors that can locate the reflectors by sending a radar signal. It's a vital additional safety feature that allows you to be found and rescued faster in the event of an avalanche. Keep it in mind when making your next purchases: your safety and that of your loved ones must always come first. Once you've chosen your freeride clothing, all that's left is to fine-tune your fitness so you're ready when the time comes and can fully enjoy that incredible sense of freedom as you glide across pristine snow.
