What is Fast Hiking?
Fast Hiking sits between hiking and trail running. It's a dynamic form of hiking — active and fast-paced, sometimes involving running or at the very least long strides on the descents.
What are the benefits of Fast Hiking?
Fast Hiking is an excellent way to improve your overall fitness. The brisk, sustained pace challenges your cardiovascular system, strengthens your leg muscles and builds endurance. Regular physical activity releases endorphins — the feel-good hormones — which can help reduce stress and anxiety and boost your mood. Being out in nature surrounded by stunning scenery also encourages relaxation and a sense of connection with the environment. Fast Hiking lets you cover greater distances in less time, opening up the chance to explore new terrain and discover varied landscapes. It also gives you the opportunity to set personal goals and take on challenges — whether that's improving your speed, increasing your distance, or pushing through tougher terrain.
Clothing for fast-hiking: Lightweight and Stretch
Like any sport, fast-hiking calls for specific, purpose-built kit. That's why Cimalp has developed a range of specialist clothing, designed for those who want to cover mountain trails at a faster pace.
A warm and stretchy base layer
It needs to be warm and ultra-compact. But also highly stretchy, giving you a full range of movement — especially important in fast-hiking where mobility is everything.
An ultra-lightweight and compact waterproof jacket
Choose a waterproof jacket with a 3-layer ULTRASHELL membrane and large chest vents that deliver excellent breathability at full effort!
Stretch shorts or resistant trousers
Stretch shorts give you perfect mobility and optimal comfort. They need to be both lightweight and breathable, with an ergonomic, fitted cut. For trousers, prioritise lightness, comfort and durability — they'll help you push the pace on every route. Depending on the weather, a windproof or water-repellent pair of trousers can be a smart choice.
A lightweight and fairly flexible pair of shoes
Your feet need to feel lightweight, and the shoe must allow a good foot roll and adapt well to the terrain. Fast hiking shoes are most often low-cut uppers, with a good sole that grips the ground. The sole is fairly soft with pronounced cushioning, for fast movement in the mountains.
