When should you wear your waterproof hiking shoes?
Waterproof hiking shoes are not always necessary. On fairly dry ground or with light morning dew, water-repellent shoes are sufficient. Water beads off the fabric and your feet stay dry without any issue. However, on waterlogged ground, during a hike in sustained rain or on snowy terrain, opt for waterproof shoes that will keep you insulated. For optimal protection, we recommend shoes with a waterproofing rating of 10,000 Schmerber or more. You can also improve the waterproofing of your shoes in extreme conditions with gaiters or overboots. These accessories protect the upper part of the shoe from water ingress and offer undeniable windproof protection, essential in high mountains or polar terrain.
The importance of breathability
A waterproof membrane must strike the right balance between waterproofing and breathability. It must prevent water from getting in while allowing water vapour to escape, to avoid moisture build-up inside the shoe. Good breathability is essential for maintaining optimal comfort and reducing the risk of blisters. The Ultrashell membrane offers outstanding breathability of 80,000G/M²/24H, ensuring your feet stay dry and comfortable even when perspiring heavily.
What ankle height should you choose for your waterproof hiking shoes?
The height of your shoe collar is a crucial factor to consider depending on the terrain and your hiking style. For rough or steep trails, a high collar is recommended. It provides excellent ankle support, prevents injuries and keeps out stones and dust. If you are carrying a heavy pack, a high collar can also help stabilise your ankles and distribute the load. If you prefer lightness and freedom of movement, especially on easier trails, a low collar is more suitable. It allows greater ankle mobility and is generally lighter, which can reduce fatigue over long distances.
Our tips for caring for your waterproof hiking shoes
To extend the life of your shoes and maintain their performance, regular care is essential. Loosen the laces and tongue to aid drying and ventilation. Brush the outsoles to remove stones and debris, and prevent premature wear. Clean the insoles if needed and make sure they are completely dry before putting them back. Use a soft brush and lukewarm water to clean the outside of your shoes, avoiding harsh products. Leave your shoes to dry in the open air in a dry, breathable location, away from direct sunlight and intense heat sources. This helps maintain the breathability of the membrane and prevents unpleasant odours.
