How can you protect your backpack from the rain?

Several Osprey backpacks, including the HIKELITE, KESTREL and KYTE, have a built-in rain cover. For other backpacks, Deuter offers RAINCOVER covers sold separately. You can also pack your gear in a waterproof bag, such as a 3- to 8-litre Cimalp DRY BAG. Our guide protecting your backpack from rain offers other solutions.

What backpack volume do you need for a hiking trip?

Choose based on the length of your trip: 20 litres for a summer day hike, 30 litres if you need warm layers or are spending a night in a mountain hut, 40 litres for two or three nights in huts or one night camping, and 50 litres or more for a self-supported multi-day trip. Our guide choosing the ideal size for a hiking backpack covers each option in detail.

Is a 20-litre backpack waterproof?

Not completely. Osprey’s HIKELITE, STRATOS and SIRRUS have an integrated rain cover stored at the bottom of the pack. For other models, our guide to protecting your backpack from rain sets out the options.

Who did we design it for?

For mountain bikers heading out for the day with water and an extra layer, and for hiking. A 20 L pack that stays stable during exertion.

How does it carry?

Osprey's AirSpeed back panel stretches mesh to let air flow through. A sliding harness adjusts the back length, alongside a wraparound hip belt and adjustable chest strap.

How is it organised?

Wide front opening, two zipped hip-belt pockets, scratch-resistant zipped pocket, LidLock helmet attachment, flashing-light attachment and a rain cover stowed at the base.

What about hydration?

A separate zipped compartment holds a 2.5 L hydration bladder with a quick-release connector. The magnetic mouthpiece grips the chest strap.

The lightweight pack that simplifies every outing

Too much volume, too much weight, and the essentials always at the bottom. A poorly organised pack makes every transition between riding and walking harder.

This pack is designed to carry your gear while you move. Its tapered profile stays close to your body without restricting you, and the taut mesh back maintains an air gap between the pack and your back. The front panel opening gives direct access to your gear, the wraparound hip belt and pockets distribute the load, and the helmet grips its attachment in one movement when you continue on foot.

Because a good carry system means less fiddling and more time on the trail.
