What trail kit should you choose for the distance and weather?
At the start, the car park is still in the shade and you’re shivering in a t-shirt; by midday, you’re running in full sun. Build your kit for both moments. For a short run in dry weather, a t-shirt and shorts are enough. As soon as your route gets longer or climbs higher, pack a second layer and a waterproof jacket. On long races, the rules require some of this kit: read them before putting yours together.
Trail tops: t-shirt, long sleeves or half-zip top
Choose your t-shirt by weight. The EIGER weighs 80 g in size M and the BAUGES 95 g; for women, the LA FRANCAISE weighs just 75 g in size S. Find them all in our trail T-shirts.
When the morning is cool, pull the MUSAN on over them. This half-zip trail top weighs 202 g and works as a second layer: zip up the high collar at the start, then open it on the climb. Its product details state that it meets mandatory kit requirements for ultra-trails. In winter, the ALBAN top (210 g) replaces the t-shirt, and its thumb loops keep the sleeves in place under your gloves.
Trail shorts, liner shorts or tights: choosing your bottoms
On a long run, a seam in the wrong pair of shorts will eventually chafe your inner thighs. For long distances, choose shorts with built-in liner shorts. The AOSTE (230 g) adds a six-pocket waistband, including two zipped pockets; the LAVAREDO weighs 140 g and has ventilated liner shorts. For short races, the OBIOU weighs 65 g and still has a key pocket. For women, the THABOR (105 g) has built-in briefs, while the MUZELLE weighs 50 g.
Compare these details on each product page:
- Weight: from 50 g for the MUZELLE to 230 g for the AOSTE.
- Support: built-in liner shorts in the AOSTE and LAVAREDO; built-in briefs in the THABOR.
- Pockets: six in the AOSTE waistband and four in the TENDE tights waistband, which holds a 500 ml flask.

Waterproof trail jacket: 10,000 or 20,000 mm?
On a ridge, rain comes with wind, and a water-repellent windbreaker is no longer enough. The STORM weighs 225 g in size M, with a 10,000 mm Cimashell membrane and sealed seams. Its product details state that it meets the standard accepted for mandatory kit at UTMB-style ultras. For sustained rain, switch to the STORM PRO : its 3-layer Ultrashell membrane has a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head and a breathability rating of 80,000 g/m²/24 h, at a weight of 285 g. The STORM PRO + fits over your pack, with side zips for access to your flasks. The STORM PRO PANT overtrousers weigh 300 g.
Compare them in our trail jackets, and check your race’s kit list with our article on mandatory waterproof clothing.
Men’s and women’s trail kit: accessories and sizing
T-shirts, shorts and jackets come in men’s and women’s fits. On descents, the wind quickly chills your hands. The HYBRID gloves (60 g) have a fold-over cover that turns them into mittens; the WINTER GLOVES (40 g) let you use your phone’s screen. RUN HIGH socks combine merino wool with a high cuff, while the 5 PANEL CAP (47 g) provides UPF 40 UV protection.
Choose your usual size : that’s the advice on every product page, except for the women’s STORM PRO, which runs slightly small. All Cimalp clothing comes with lifetime repairs. To complete your kit, add some trail shoes and a trail pack.
