How to dress for nordic walking?

06 Sep. 2022

Nordic walking is an outdoor physical activity that requires little equipment. Your choice of outfit should however be carefully considered and suited to the time of year when you practise this sport. In this article, we explain how to dress for nordic walking.

Dressing for warm weather

Your nordic walking outfit varies depending on several factors, including the climate. In warm weather, your clothing should above all be lightweight, flexible and breathable. You can opt for shorter garments that allow good ventilation.

For the upper body, a t-shirt in synthetic fibres such as polyester is a good option. Highly breathable, it allows you to wick perspiration easily. For the trousers, you can choose between a lightweight short, a trail brief or a lightweight breathable pair of trousers. Your clothing should be fairly fitted to avoid chafing while walking. A lightweight windproof can also be packed as an extra. As for colours, it is best to opt for light-coloured garments that reflect rather than absorb heat.

Finally, lightweight and breathable shoes with a flexible sole are recommended for nordic walking in summer or warm weather.

Dressing for cold weather

In winter or cold weather, it is important to plan for a few extra layers so you don't suffer from the cold. The best approach is to dress using the three-layer system and adopt the onion technique. Set off with several layers and remove them progressively as your body warms up.

For the first layer, a technical base layer in synthetic fibres is perfectly suited. For the second layer, you can choose a hollow-fibre fleece jacket that provides good thermal insulation. Finally, go for a waterproof windproof jacket as your third layer. It will protect you from the elements.

For the trousers, you have several options depending on your preferences. Running tights or trousers designed for nordic walking work perfectly. Trousers provide comfort, freedom of movement and protection from both moisture and cold.

Finally, opt for flexible shoes with a waterproof upper and soles featuring an anti-slip layer.

Essential accessories for nordic walking

To complete your outfit, it is important to protect your extremities, especially in cold weather. Warm and breathable thermal gloves, a versatile neck gaiter (suitable for wind, sun or cold alike), or a thermal headband are perfect for nordic walking. In warm weather, UV protection is essential — make sure you have sunglasses and a breathable cap. For socks, choose walking-specific socks that will help you avoid blisters.

Finally, your choice of poles will also be very important. Beginners generally make do with aluminium poles with steel tips, while regular walkers tend to opt for carbon poles with tungsten tips.

Dressing for nordic walking is relatively straightforward. It is important to choose your outfit carefully to ensure comfort during your activity.
