How to run or hike in the mountains when it rains?

How to make the most of the mountains in the rain?

Spring is always an unpredictable season. Weather conditions are often changeable — spring is well and truly here, yet summer is already knocking at the door. But in May, weeks can be broken up by spells of rain. To head into the mountains, you need high-performance clothing and accessories that will protect you whatever the conditions. Follow the guide on those sodden trails!

Running in the rain — easy as anything!

Rain can be an obstacle in many ways. To run in the rain, waterproof and breathable trail kit is therefore essential. So if you don't want to lose motivation during your training sessions or regular running outings, choose technical, high-performance clothing. French brand Cimalp kits you out from head to toe so you stay dry.

For waterproof and water-repellent kit, the Drôme-based brand recommends:

  • a waterproof jacket with a minimum 10,000mm water column rating, and windproof
  • an ultra-lightweight, quick-drying T-shirt. The Bauges model, for example, weighs just 120g in size M and features an anti-bacterial treatment to limit the growth of bacteria — and therefore odours — during activity.
  • a lightweight, slim-fit, stretch trail short with quick-drying fabric: comfort is key to progression
  • a pair of trail shoes with grip suited to all terrains. Cimalp has notably developed the Drop Evolution, which offers 3 outsoles with different drops: 8, 6 and 4mm. This allows you to evolve your stride without risking injury.

With this kind of kit, you're protected during training sessions and races alike. In fact, the trail race, the Duo de l'Hermitage, held every year at the start of May in Tain-l'Hermitage, will take place in the rain this year! A rare occurrence for an event that is very often subject to scorching heat.

Hiking with peace of mind

The mountains are full of stunning landscapes that can look even more beautiful in the rain. It would be a shame to miss out! Cimalp also offers an extensive range in the hiking category. And the principle of a complete kit for hiking in the rain remains the same.

  • a breathable, waterproof jacket
  • a waterproof or at minimum water-repellent pair of trousers or shorts
  • a lightweight, breathable T-shirt, such as those made from merino wool fibres

Gearing up properly requires a certain budget, so make sure you look after your waterproof clothing properly by following a few basic rules. Finally, to avoid the unexpected in the mountains, here are 6 essential points to check before setting off on a hiking trip in the mountains, whether for a day or a multi-day tour!
