Technical Jacket

Key features of technical jackets

Technical jackets are designed to protect athletes from the elements such as wind, rain, snow and cold, while offering optimal comfort and freedom of movement. However, with the multitude of options available on the market, it can be difficult to choose the jacket that best meets your needs. In this article, we will guide you through the key elements to consider when buying your technical jacket.

Protection against the elements

Protection against the elements is paramount during your outdoor activities. Make sure the technical jacket you choose is waterproof to keep you dry in rain and snow. But also ensure it is a breathable technical jacket that wicks moisture from the inside out, preventing you from feeling overheated during intense efforts.

Understanding waterproofness and breathability

The waterproofness of a jacket refers to its ability to protect against external moisture (rain, snow). Expressed in Schmerbers or millimetres (1 mm = 1 Schmerber), it is measured by placing the fabric under a column of water at increasing height and measuring the height at which water penetrates it: the higher the value, the more waterproof the garment. For everyday use or light activities in the rain, a jacket with a waterproofness of around 5,000 mm to 10,000 mm is generally sufficient. For more intense activities or more extreme conditions, it is recommended to choose a jacket with a higher waterproofness rating, ranging from 15,000 mm to 20,000 mm and above.

The breathability of a jacket refers to its ability to evacuate water vapour resulting from the skier's perspiration. Two units of measurement exist: the RET (Resistance Evaporative Thermique), where the lower the value, the more breathable the fabric: RET below 6 = highly breathable; RET between 6 and 12 = breathable; RET between 12 and 20 = low breathability. The second unit of measurement is g/m²/24h. In this case, the higher the value, the easier moisture is evacuated: 30,000 = extremely breathable garment, 20,000 = very good breathability, 10,000 = breathable, 5,000 = low breathability.

Choosing based on activity and conditions

Depending on the type of activities you practise and the weather conditions you will face, choose a technical jacket with the right insulation. Lightweight jackets such as the "softshell" are ideal for spring and autumn outings, while warmer winter jackets are preferable for extremely cold temperatures.

Comfort and freedom of movement

Technical jackets are designed to offer optimal freedom of movement. Check that the jacket's cut and sleeves allow full ease of movement, especially when practising demanding sporting activities. An adjustable hood is a valuable asset for protecting you from the elements without compromising your field of vision. Look for a well-fitted hood that stays in place even during movement. Find out about the fabric used in the jacket's construction. Brands often use innovative technologies to improve the performance of technical jackets, whether in terms of durability, moisture wicking or weight. Think about layering under your technical jacket. If you are used to combining multiple garments to adapt to temperature variations, choose a jacket that fits easily into the 3-layer system. Wear a thermal base layer as the 1st layer, then a fleece jacket or a down jacket as the 2nd layer. With the protective jacket as the 3rd layer, you'll be perfectly protected. Some technical jackets are specifically designed for particular activities. If you are a skier, for example, look for technical jackets suited to winter sports, with special features such as pockets for your lift pass, your phone, reinforcements or reflective elements for better visibility on the slopes.
