As part of a nutrition plan for UTMB® preparation, an important phase will be adapting to a specific diet, maintaining discipline and managing the constraints of race-day fuelling. Preparing your nutrition for ultra trail racing is therefore fundamental to avoid disappointment.

A discipline to adopt
As soon as you begin your physical preparation for the UTMB®, several months out, you need to adopt a suitable nutritional plan. Where possible, this should be supported by advice from a nutritionist or coach and should be precise about daily calorie intake and the balance between proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Your discipline in sticking to it will largely determine your ability to arrive in good shape on race day and, above all, to hit the milestones required in your preparation. Don't neglect your nutrition months in advance, as it will also shape your ability to train effectively.
Simulating race conditions
Race nutrition is also a challenge to manage. It is therefore important to train your body to fuel on gels, energy bars and specialist drinks on all your training outings, especially the longer ones. And to get used to what you will find at the nutrition feed stations on race day. Following these fundamentals will help you avoid digestive issues or feelings of nausea during your final high-intensity training sessions, your key weekend sessions, or worse, on race day at the UTMB®.
