What’s the difference between AirSpeed and AirScape back systems?

The AirSpeed back system suspends a taut mesh panel between the pack and your back: air circulates and your back stays dry even in high heat, as on the SIRRUS 24 and HIKELITE models. The ventilated AirScape panel keeps the load close to your body: moulded on the TALON 44, it follows your movements over uneven terrain; on the KYTE LT 45, it is paired with a LightWire frame.

How do you adjust an Osprey backpack?

On models with an adjustable back, such as the SIRRUS 24 or ARIEL 55, start by setting the back length to match your torso. The ARIEL 55 also lets you adjust the hip belt and shoulder straps separately. With the pack loaded, tighten the hip belt around your hips, then adjust the shoulder straps and load lifters.

Is an Osprey backpack waterproof?

On the ARIEL 55, the fabric’s water-repellent coating withstands light showers. For prolonged rain, use the integrated rain cover. It is stored at the bottom of the pack on the STRATOS 24, SIRRUS 24, HIKELITE models, KESTREL 48 and KYTE LT 45; the ARIEL 55 has one too.

Osprey hiking backpacks: STRATOS, SIRRUS, TALON or TEMPEST

Climbing in the sun with a pack against your back, you soon feel sweat building up. Osprey’s AirSpeed system suspends tensioned mesh between the pack and your back on the women’s SIRRUS 24 (1,200 g) and the unisex HIKELITE 18 and 26, weighing 670 and 730 g respectively. The men’s STRATOS 24 (1,300 g) also has a tensioned mesh panel that sits away from your back. The moulded, ventilated AirScape panel keeps the men’s TALON 44 close to your body on uneven terrain. The women’s TEMPEST 33 weighs 1,200 g for 33 litres, while the SPORTLITE 20 weighs just 467 g. In hot weather, choose a suspended mesh back panel; on technical terrain, choose an AirScape back panel.

Osprey trekking and travel packs: KESTREL, KYTE, ARIEL and FARPOINT

For multi-day trips, the men’s KESTREL 48 (2,100 g) keeps the sleeping bag separate at the bottom of the pack and lets you stow poles without stopping, thanks to the Stow-on-the-Go system. For women, the KYTE LT 45 (1,700 g) has a fit and hip belt designed for women’s anatomy; the ARIEL 55 (2,200 g) lets you adjust the hip belt, shoulder straps and back length separately. For travel, the men’s FARPOINT TREK 75 and women’s FAIRVIEW TREK 70 open like a suitcase and have an integrated cover: before your flight, unfold it to protect the straps and buckles in the hold. Osprey in winter: FIRN, SOELDEN and SOPRIS ski touring packs

On a ski tour, your hands get cold at every kick turn. The FIRN 18 (1,020 g) lets you attach skis at the sides with a lasso system while keeping the pack on your back, and has a front avalanche-gear pocket. The FIRN 28 (1,190 g) opens from the back. The men’s SOELDEN, available in 25- and 32-litre sizes, also opens from the back and keeps a shovel and probe in a separate compartment. The women’s SOPRIS 20 has shoulder straps shaped for a women’s fit and a ski attachment. Wear your avalanche transceiver on your person, never in your pack. Trail running and mountain biking: DURO, DYNA, RAPTOR and RAVEN

For trail running, the men’s DURO 6 (397 g in size S) and women’s DYNA 6 (384 g in size S) carry flasks on the chest; the DYNA 6 also has a compartment for a hydration bladder. For mountain biking, the men’s RAPTOR 10 and women’s RAVEN 10 and 14, weighing 700 g, include a 2.5-litre reservoir with a magnetic bite valve and a tool pouch separate from the main load.
