In itself, there are few accidents across the entire history of the UTMB®, but it is the whole trail environment in the mountains that is often a factor in accidents, whether during training or on free-route runs.

Accidents during the race
Throughout the history of the UTMB®, there have been very few serious accidents on the courses over the years. The organisation is well-drilled and provides a substantial infrastructure with rescue resources ready for any situation. There are of course minor accidents and slight injuries every year, but nothing serious enough to tarnish the reputation of the event.
Training accidents
On the contrary, it is during the preparation phases for the UTMB® that many accidents occur. Some runners take on challenges they are often ill-equipped and underprepared for, and face physical failures. These take place in an unstructured context, with no specific or enhanced safety net. Moreover, the feats of the world's best sometimes encourage beginners to set off on mountain trails with no gear, no preparation and no training. It is in these conditions, every time, that serious or even fatal accidents occur — a tragic reality. One can think, for example, of the tragic disappearance of a trail runner just weeks before the 2017 edition. Ultra trail is a demanding sport and requires at least a degree of skill and preparation. It is often impossible — and in any case extremely dangerous — to set off without gear or training on paths as hazardous as those in the Mont-Blanc massif. To find out more:
