Spring hiking: the guide to choosing the right outfit

Spring hiking: the guide to choosing the right outfit

Randonner au printemps : le guide pour choisir la bonne tenue

With the return of fine weather, spring hiking becomes a real pleasure. It's the ideal season to go out and explore landscapes coming back to life. However, this transitional period between winter and summer calls for some careful preparation.

Indeed, temperatures can be mild, but changeable weather — with the risk of rain or cold — can make the experience far less enjoyable if you're not properly equipped. So, how do you dress for a spring hiking trip while staying comfortable, protected and ready for all conditions? Here are some tips to help you choose the ideal spring hiking outfit.

Which fabrics should you choose for hiking?

To prepare your spring hiking outfit, it is essential to choose suitable materials to ensure comfort and protection. Here are the fabrics to go for:

  • merino wool: This material is renowned for its breathability, its ability to wick away sweat and its thermal comfort. Merino wool is ideal for hiking base-layer t-shirts.
  • Breathable fabric: Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon are ideal for their moisture-wicking properties. This type of material dries quickly and allows good air circulation for maximum comfort.
  • Waterproofing and water repellency: When conditions become wetter, it is crucial to opt for waterproof or water-repellent fabrics. Many hiking jackets and trousers feature membranes that effectively protect against rain while remaining breathable.

To ensure the durability of your kit and its effectiveness, choose quality technical hiking clothing that delivers both comfort and performance. Technical, durable gear is the key to a successful hike.

Spring hiking clothing: upper body

In spring, the weather can be particularly changeable, with warm days and cool — even rainy — evenings. To hike comfortably, it is important to choose the right upper body clothing.

  • Hiking shirt or t-shirt: Depending on conditions, you can opt for lightweight shirts with long or short sleeves. If mornings are still cool, choose a merino wool or technical fabric shirt that helps regulate body temperature. On warmer days, don't hesitate to reach for a technical t-shirt to keep you cool.
  • Fleece jacket: A lightweight fleece jacket is ideal as a mid layer. It provides thermal protection while remaining breathable.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket: Showers can be frequent in spring. It is therefore essential to keep a waterproof and windproof jacket in your pack, to use as a third layer when needed. A 3-in-1 jacket or a softshell jacket is also a great choice for handling changeable conditions without adding too much weight.

Spring hiking clothing: lower body

The lower body is often less exposed to temperature swings, but it is important to adapt to the weather and terrain.

  • Lightweight hiking trousers : Go for lightweight, breathable and comfortable trousers. If the weather is variable, convertible trousers can be a practical solution: you can transform your trousers into shorts in an instant.
  • Waterproof trousers: Sometimes conditions can deteriorate, and waterproof trousers will be needed to protect you from rain or muddy ground.
  • Long underpants or technical base layer: When mornings or higher altitudes bring cooler temperatures, long underpants or thermal base layers will keep you warm without compromising comfort.

On the warmest days, bermuda shorts or hiking shorts will be ideal. If you're heading out towards the end of spring, these lightweight options will let you make the most of the fine weather.

How to adapt your outfit to the weather?

Spring weather can be particularly unpredictable. For a spring hiking trip, it is important to adapt your outfit to the conditions.

When temperatures are low, go for thermal clothing such as merino wool base layers, an insulating jacket and a windproof jacket. Protect your extremities with gloves and a beanie.

In wet conditions, go for waterproof or water-repellent clothing. A hardshell jacket with a breathable membrane will protect you from the elements without causing excessive sweating.

On warm days, go for lightweight clothing, ideally UV-protective, to shield yourself from the sun. Remember to apply sunscreen too.

It's important to bear in mind that spring is a transitional season, where temperatures can vary considerably. Adapting your outfit to cold, warm or wet conditions keeps you comfortable throughout your hiking trip.

Spring hiking outfit: don't overlook socks and footwear

Socks and footwear are essential for keeping you comfortable throughout your hiking trip.

  1. Hiking shoes: Go for lightweight and breathable shoes suited to the season. On wet terrain, choose waterproof shoes to keep your feet dry. Avoid standard trainers, which are not suited to long distances or varied terrain effort.
  2. Socks: Choose lightweight and breathable hiking socks. For long days on the trail, go for anti-blister hiking socks with a double-skin construction. Compression socks can also be a great option to boost circulation and reduce discomfort.

Don't forget that comfortable footwear and the right socks will help you avoid foot pain and fully enjoy your hiking trip.
