Recognised as one of the oldest civilisations in the world, Chinese culture fascinates far beyond our Western reference points. A vast country of nearly 10,000,000 km² made up of grandiose landscapes and an extraordinary heritage, China also boasts a highly diverse population. Are you planning a trip to this country, but not quite sure how to pack your bags? Let me guide you by suggesting suitable outfits depending on the regions and climates.
The climate in China
The vastness of China naturally results in very different climates depending on the region visited. Let's take an overview:
Visiting Northern China
The climate in this region is continental:
- Winters there are harsh, dry, and sunny.
- Summers are hot. The monsoon can also hit the region.
- In spring and autumn, temperatures are mild and pleasant. However, sandstorms can occur around mid-April, particularly in the Beijing area.
Visiting Southern China This area is less harsh than the North, but on the other hand much more humid. The coastal regions have an oceanic climate.
Visiting the Silk Road The climate in this area is dry all year round. Its summers are hot, sometimes scorching in desert areas, and its winters are very cold. The temperature fluctuations between day and night are very significant.
Visiting Tibet

In this region, temperatures vary dramatically throughout the same day. In summer, daytime temperatures can reach 30°C, while nights will be very cold.
In winter, it is very cold. Rain is rare, as this area is very arid.
For these regions, opt for the 3-layer system, so as the day progresses, you can stay warm! Also choose lightweight clothing and anti-mosquito apparel to cope with higher temperatures.
What to pack for your trip to China?
Hiking accessories
If you want to go hiking for several days, I recommend setting off with a hiking backpack. This will force you to travel light and make life easier during your multi-day hikes. Indeed, it is much more practical to travel with a backpack than with a wheeled suitcase!

If you want to explore the Great Wall of China or the various Chinese mountains on a multi-day hike, I advise you to take hiking poles with you. Indeed, poles will relieve your back and joints during exertion. Furthermore, using walking poles allows you to transfer 30% of the weight to your arms. Thus, this will not only build muscle in your legs, but also in your shoulders and arms.
Choose them as light as possible so they do not hinder your walking, while also ensuring the durability of your poles.
Hiking shoes
First of all, identify the planned activities on site (walk, hiking, trek). Depending on this, you will need to choose the most suitable pair and often the most versatile. In any case, I advise you to invest in good hiking shoes. They will provide proper ankle support. To help you choose them, check out the's article on the subject.Protecting yourself effectively against mosquitoes and diseases
In China, several diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes: malaria, dengue fever, as well as Japanese encephalitis or lymphatic filariasis. To fully enjoy your trip to China without worrying about mosquitoes, don't hesitate to rely on anti-mosquito clothing.
Active'Dry fabric, made with chitin, is a natural, hypoallergenic fabric. These clothes will actively protect you against bites. Shirts, t-shirts, trousers—there are many styles available, and you will easily find the right one for a bite-free hiking trip!
Protecting yourself from the cold and wind
To withstand the cold, I recommend investing in thermal base layers to wear as a first layer, as well as fleece jackets . Thanks to these clothes, you will be able to face the cold with complete peace of mind! Some fleece models will also protect you from the wind. For example, 3D Air Stop technology will protect you with its windproof membrane.
