When should you wear a softshell garment?
A softshell garment is versatile and suits a wide range of outdoor activities. It is designed to offer protection against wind, light rain and cold, while remaining breathable and lightweight. It is therefore ideal for intense sports activities such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking and trail. In general, the softshell jacket is better suited to mild weather conditions, when the temperature is between 5 and 15 degrees. It is also recommended for intense activities, as it offers a great freedom of movement and good breathability. However, it is important to note that the softshell jacket is not designed for extreme weather conditions, such as snowstorms or heavy rain.
What is the difference between a hardshell jacket and a softshell jacket?
Hardshell and softshell jackets are two types of outdoor jackets used for open-air activities. The main difference between these two types of jackets lies in their construction and intended use. A hardshell jacket is generally made with a waterproof, breathable membrane. It is designed to protect against the elements, such as rain, snow and wind, while allowing perspiration to escape. They are often used for activities requiring protection from the elements, such as mountaineering, skiing, snowboarding or mountain hiking.
On the other hand, a softshell jacket is made from stretchy, breathable fabric that offers a degree of weather protection while providing greater freedom of movement. Softshell jackets are more flexible and comfortable than hardshell jackets, but they are not as waterproof. They are often used for activities requiring high mobility, such as climbing, hiking, cycling or running.
Are Softshell garments breathable and waterproof?
Softshell garments are generally designed to be both breathable and resistant to light weather, but they are not fully waterproof. The level of breathability and weather resistance will depend on the type of Softshell used and its construction. In general, Softshell jackets are made from technical materials that offer a degree of water resistance while allowing body moisture to escape, making them more breathable than standard waterproof jackets. However, it is important to note that Softshell jackets are not as waterproof as waterproof jackets.
