What is fast hiking?

Fast hiking sits between hiking and trail running. It’s a more dynamic form of hiking: walking briskly, sometimes running, or at least taking long strides on descents.

What are the benefits of fast hiking?

Fast hiking is an excellent way to improve overall fitness. Brisk, sustained walking works the cardiovascular system, strengthens leg muscles and builds endurance. Regular physical activity releases endorphins, which can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood. Being in nature and enjoying mountain scenery can also help you relax and connect with your surroundings. Fast hiking lets you cover more ground in less time, giving you the chance to explore new terrain and varied landscapes. It also offers opportunities to set personal goals and take on challenges, whether that means increasing your speed or distance or tackling obstacles.

Clothing for fast hiking: lightweight and stretchy

Like any sport, fast hiking calls for suitable, purpose-built kit. That’s why Cimalp has developed a range of clothing designed for those who want to move faster on mountain trails.

A warm, stretchy thermal base layer

It should be warm and ultra-compact, but also highly stretchy, giving you plenty of freedom of movement. That matters especially in fast hiking, where mobility is essential.

An ultralight, compact waterproof jacket

Choose a waterproof jacket with a 3-layer Ultrashell® membrane and large chest vents for excellent breathability when you’re working hard.

Stretchy, durable shorts or trousers

Stretch shorts give you freedom of movement and comfort. They should be lightweight and breathable, with a close, ergonomic fit. For trousers, look for low weight, comfort and durability. They’ll help you pick up the pace on any route. Depending on the weather, windproof trousers or a water-repellent finish may be a good choice.

A pair of lightweight, flexible shoes

Keep weight off your feet: your shoes should allow a smooth stride and adapt well to the terrain. Fast-hiking shoes are usually low-cut, with soles that provide good grip. The soles are fairly soft and well cushioned, helping you move quickly through the mountains.
